The rise of English children's literature began with the revival of interest in fairy tales in the second half of the 18th century. The English already had a modem view of childhood and the middle classes had risen and grown in the 18th century. From the second half of the 18th century, fairy tales which flourished on the European continent were translated and rewritten for children in the United Kingdom. Additionally fairy tales existed and circulated in oral form or chapbooks and they were revived then. At the end of the 18th century, due to the rise of Romanticism, the English had been more interested in fairy tales. After the brothers Grimm, fairy tales achieved the status they still have as children's literature. On the basis of it the golden age of children's literature had arrived in the United Kingdom in the middle of the 19th century and fairy tales had blossomed as literary fairy tales.
Literary fairy tales, the largest part of the golden age of children's literature, are literature based on fairy tales. Using fairy tale code the writers says "what life is like" in their works. Some writers, fir example Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll, George MacDonald, write fairy tales for children and adults at the same time. The writers wrote fantasies for children, and commented on the deleterious effect of the industrial revolution made social and political statements for adults. The magic of literary fairy tales conserves the fairy tale tradition and comments on reality.
Despite its humble beginnings, children's literature blossomed in the middle of the 19th century. Children's literature, as well as literary fairy tales, contain both fairy land and reality. So they were a blueprint of the society, a prophecy of change, and also a window on history. Children's literature continues to be a time-honored way to do so for both children and adults.
