Chun Kyung-ja is an artist who created her own style of color painting in succession to Korean traditional arts. Although color painting is her representative art style, the artist also created many pieces of travel sketches, illustrations and sketches. Known to enjoy writing, Chun Kyung-ja has published a series of essays consistently since she released her first collection of essays titled A Lady Esquisse in 1955. She embodied the memory of her life and arts not only in paintings but also in the form of texts, and printed them along with illustrations. Her illustrations were published in newspapers, magazines and essay books, which can be classified into ink paintings, color paintings and sketches according to their production techniques.
Since she began to publish her writings in newspapers and magazines, she drew many illustrations and left numerous cover-page illustrations, table of contents illustrations and other artworks more than known to the public. The illustrations published in 1950s and 1960s including ink paintings and cover-page illustrations reflect the characteristic of each period and reveal the drawing pattern of the artist. Since 1969 when she travelled around the world, she began to publish traveler’s essays serially with sketches she drew during the trip. The published illustrations included sketches that were quickly drawn with a pen and then softly colored, and pencil sketches.
As Chun Kyung-ja actively illustrated her life in a serious of essays, her illustrations served not only as an element that helped readers understand her writings but also as a symbol, a means that represented her life, and gained significance. Although she wrote along the path of her life, her illustrations contained a symbolic meaning she wanted to convey together with her writings. Her representative artworks recreated as illustrations, or her previous illustrations that were duplicated or modified can be found in her writings. This tendency is evident in her autobiographical serial essays, My Autobiography with Drawings.
My Autobiography with Drawings is her autobiographical narrative that contains plenty of illustrations along with writings. Multiple original paintings are also found in the essays. Most of illustrations included in these essays are the depiction of materials that symbolize herself and the drawing of her representative artworks or ladies except some travel sketches. Furthermore, many illustrations feature the composition and icons identical to those used in her color paintings. Among them, an illustration of a lady drawn in 1977 is especially noticeable. Although the illustration and the color painting were produced in the same year using different materials, the habitual practices of the artist, their form and composition, the direction of brush touch and a shading technique are identical, forming an organic relation. In addition, considering the time of production, this illustration seems to be the motif or esquisse of the color painting, which is different from her previous illustrations that used to be the drawing of her representative works.
