This paper analyzed the structure of the wartime doctrines in which the modern school of J?doshinsh? distorted it’s own doctrines in order to establish the line of nationalism. For doing this, this paper suggested first the brief history of studies on the wartime doctrines. It is for setting up a direction of studies on the wartime doctrines by analyzing the present state of the studies up to now. The researcher in this field who conducted the pioneering achievements is Brian Victoria. He elucidates well that the Zen spirit was utilized as a tool to make modern Japan militarism. Besides it, the studies concerning nationalism and militarism of the Japanese Buddhism which were provoked in the West spread over Japanese scholars. This history of the studies covers studies on wartime doctrines about the Zen school, J?doshinsh? school, and Nichiren(日蓮) school.
The next is about the wartime doctrines of the J?doshinsh? school. This paper analysed them through three categories: first, the Jewel of Buddha and the Japanese emperor; second, the Pure Land (J?do) and a view on birth and death; and third, Buddhism and war.
First, this paper elucidated the relation between the Jewel of Buddha and the emperor through the relations of the faith notion about the Master of Dharma (H?shu: 法主, the Chief leader of Order), and the J?doshinsh? school as the empire’s religion. The Master of Dharma held the supreme power in the Order and was respected as a living buddha. Through the marriage between emperor’s family and the family of the Master of Dharma at that time, they expanded the religious power depending on the national power. Based on such base of power in the Order, the emperor as governor of the state was honored as the same status with Amit?yus (阿彌陀: Amit?bha) Buddha, who is the Jewel of Buddha.
Second, concerning the Pure Land and a view on birth and death, this paper explained that the afterlife view of the J?doshinsh? school which took the Pure Land of afterlife as their doctrine was distorted. In other words, in the actual battle filed, it was recognized that the Yasukuni Shrine managed by the state was a place to meet again in afterlife at. Though the J?doshinsh? school denies that the Yasukuni Shrine is the Pure Land, in the inner aspect to argue the legitimacy of joint ancestral rites, we can notice that it is used as a substitute of the Pure Land.
Third, in the aspect of Buddhism and war, the J?doshinsh? school broke down the precept of non-killing, the first one in Buddhism. Such logics of performing wars are the ideology of “killing one person to save the many” based on “defeating the evil,” and the spirit of self-extinction to serve the total community. The former justified the wat itself, while the latter showed us that the ideology of wartime service to the public by common people, which was succeeded to on continuously after the war between Japan and Russia, was solidified into the system of wartime doctrines of the J?doshinsh? school.
