As current English educational goals in Korea place more emphasis on building communicative competence, a consequence has been an increasing neglect of grammar instruction. In an EFL context such as Korea, however, learners who have limited exposure to and experience using English cannot improve their proficiency efficiently without explicit grammar instruction. Especially for adult learners, grammar instruction can be highly effective because adults possess the capability to comprehend abstract ideas and rules. Therefore, grammar learning has been considered a prerequisite for adult learners in developing communicative competence.
In this light, the purpose of this study is to investigate Korean EFL adult learners' perceptions of grammar in terms of colloquial spoken English, and to suggest efficient grammar learning strategies for improving speaking ability through analyzing the use of grammar learning strategies by adult learners.
A pre-survey, interviews and a main survey were administered to Korean adult learners who were enrolled in English conversation classes at a private institute. In the pre-survey, 120 learners were asked to rate the degree of difficulty and importance of linguistic factors such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, idiomatic expression, and speech speed in speaking. After the pre-survey, 10 learners who answered that grammar learning is the most important for improving their speaking ability were interviewed about their reasons for choosing grammar over other linguistic factors. Lastly, the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), modified to focus on grammar, was distributed to all of the subjects. The data from the main survey was analyzed using inferential statistics according to variables of learner speaking proficiency, goals, and gender.
The results of this study specifically focused on two aspects: learners' perception of grammar and the use of grammar learning strategies. Korean adult learners not only were shown to perceive grammar as a barrier in speaking, but also thought that grammar is an important factor to develop their speaking ability. The reasons why Korean learners think grammar is important was that grammar was regarded as the fundamental factor to construct sentences, and that grammar learning cultivates their speaking accuracy. The results of the main survey were as follows. First, the category of strategies which learners use the most was the compensatory strategy, while the one that they used the least was the socio-affective strategy. Second, high and intermediate level learners used memory and socio-affective strategies more than low level learners did. Third, learners who have extrinsic motivation used meta-cognitive strategies more than learners who have intrinsic motivation.
In conclusion, the findings suggest that an educational environment in which systematic instruction can be provided by integrating grammar instruction with communicative activities should be offered to learners who wish to improve their English speaking skills. In addition, when learners receive formal grammar instruction, it can be helpful for them to use memory strategies and socio-affective strategies for developing their oral communication proficiency. Although memory and socio-affective strategies could be effective, however, it should be noted that methods and strategies should be modified according to individual learners' objectives, motivation, and learning styles. Therefore, it is also crucial that learners explore suitable methods and strategies that are appropriate to their learning styles. Lastly, to foster learners' autonomy, learning strategy-based instruction which presents diverse and appropriate strategies tailored to learners needs to be incorporated in the classroom.
