Bar consumption is continuously increasing, and its growth has been remarkable in recent years. This study attempted to confirm the characteristics of bar consumption and its utility to millennial women, the most prominent group among newly introduced visitors to bar space.
To summarize the results of semi-structured survey with two bartenders and nine millennial women, first, the bar space is distinguished from other food and beverage spaces due to its composition and interaction in space. Bars attract customers through internal content or empirical elements rather than their appearance. It reflects the new way of consuming spaces of millennials who are digital native making active use of social media and mobile devices to explore new spaces. In addition, the element of bar space, such as the presence of bar tables and bartenders, the atmosphere given by alcohol and lighting, the image of bar shown in the media, and the rules already formed in the bar space cause ‘sense of place’ which increase interaction between strangers.
Second, millennial women show a tendency of ‘self-directed symbol consumption’ while consuming bar spaces. As millennial women became independent consumers, they consume not only by necessity but also to reflect their desire. In particular, consuming bars is expensive and even it is not essential to life. Therefore it symbolizes the economic power or at least the power of decision-making of women as concentrate on where they want to spend even if reduce other consumption. Through consuming bars, millennial women acquire images as independent consumers with sophisticated tastes and purchasing power. So they share the experiences to social media or acquaintances to form their own image by borrowing images of space.
Third, millennial women reveal ambivalent desire while consuming bar spaces. This is revealed in two aspects, first of all, millennial women are fond of bars and want to consume it routinely, but at the same time, they are wary of losing their uniqueness as bar consumption is included in their daily lives. Next, millennial women utilize bars as the alternatives of the private spaces to spend their own time, but at the same time, they also show a ambivalent desire for mingling with others.
As millennial women acquired economic power, they are able to spend what they want and spend time freely without interference of male, and furthermore, they avoid marriage and childbirth to extend this freedom. Instead of rejecting traditional relationships that bind each other tightly, millennial women seek weak tie. Weak tie allows them to adjust relationships on their own, and devote the resources not to families but to themselves unlike they did under the patriarchal system.
A bar is a space that intensively reveals the desire and consumption attitude that millennial women can express according to their changed status. To millennial women, bar is a space of oblivion that allows them to forget the financial anxiety through re-confirmation of purchasing power and non-daily space that relieves daily tension felt in society. Women also discover the possibility of weak tie, mingling with people. It is clear that women's economic and social status will improve in the next generation as the level of education and the ratio of women entering society are increasing. Therefore this study, which deeply understands the new characteristics of millennial women and the desire revealed through bar consumption, is expected to be meaningful basis for predicting changes that will be accelerate in the next generation.
