In recent years, eco-friendly bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3, BFO) based
materials has attracted significant attention since it exhibits high Curie
and Neel temperature (TC ∼ 820 ℃, and TN ∼ 366 ℃, respectively),
which may help new functional ceramics for the high temperature
applications comprising a connection between electrical and magnetic
order. To understand the defect chemistry and the electrical conduction
mechanism of multiferroic BiFeO3-based systems, Bi1+xFeO3 (x=0, 0.03
and 0.05), Bi1.03Fe1-xTixO3 (x=0.005, 0.010 and 0.015), 0.65Bi1.05FeO3-
0.35BaTiO3, and (1-x)(Bi1.05FeO3-0.35BaTiO3)-xBiGaO3 (x = 0.000, 0.010,
0.015, 0.020, 0.025 and 0.030) ceramics were fabricated by
conventional solid-state reaction method with different sintering process,
and studied their structural, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and dielectric
properties as well as the most important one the high-temperature
charge transport study as a function of oxygen partial pressure.
To control the volatilization of Bi-oxides at the high sintering
temperatures and the valence fluctuations of B-site Fe cations (Fe3+ to
Fe2+ transition), the specific amount of Bi2O3 excess was used, which decreased the electrical conductivity. The first part of the dissertation is
related to the effect of bismuth amount in the BiFeO3 ceramics. By the
incorporation of Bi2O3, the electrical properties of the BFO ceramics were
much improved. To better understand the defect chemistry of the
studied materials, the high temperature equilibrium electrical
conductivity (HiTEC) was measured under various oxygen partial
pressures (pO2). From the investigated results, it was confirmed that
dwell-time plays an important role in the electrical conduction
mechanism. At the short dwell-time the pO2 dependence of electrical
conductivity becomes weak due to the contribution of oxygen vacancies.
On the other hand, for the long sintering dwell time the oxidation
reaction of the oxygen vacancies contributes the strong p-type
electronic hole conduction, which leads to strong pO2 dependency.
In the second part, the electrical conductivity behaviors of Ti-doped
Bi1.03Fe1-xTixO3 ceramics were studied, which showed pO2 independency
as ionic conduction behaviors, while were inversely related to the Ti4+
doping content because of decreasing relatively oxygen vacancy
concentration by Ti4+ doping. From the microstructure analysis, it was
also confirmed that by increasing Ti4+ doping content the average grain
size of the materials was decreased.
In the third part, the binary 0.65Bi1.05FeO3-0.35BaTiO3 (BF-35BT)
ceramics were sintered in argon and air atmospheres. From the
evaluation of conductivity results, at the relative low temperature region
the p-type conduction behavior dominates because of the oxidation
reaction of oxygen vacancies, while at the relatively high temperature
region the ionic conduction behavior dominates due to high oxygen
vacancy concentration and mobility. The BF-35BT specimens sintered in Ar atmosphere showed small average grain morphology, well-saturated
polarization electric field (P-E) hysteresis loops, and reduced trend in
electrical conductivity. On the other hand, the BF-35BT specimens
sintered in air atmosphere showed reversed effect as compared to Ar
sintered samples, in which high electrical conductivity and leaky P-E
loops were observed.
In the last part, ternary (1-x)(Bi1.05FeO3-0.35BaTiO3)-xBiGaO3 (BF-BTxBG,
x = 0.000, 0.010, 0.015, 0.020, 0.025 and 0.030) ceramics were
synthesized by using conventional solid-state reaction method in argon
and air atmospheres. From the BF-BT-xBG results, it was clearly
confirmed that the electrical conductivity decreased by using Ar
atmosphere as well as due to introduction of BG-content.
In conclusion, it was proved that the conduction mechanism and
leakage current are strongly related to the oxygen vacancy by Bi
volatilization, which can be effectively controlled by Bi excess,
introducing foreign dopants (especially donor), and sintering
atmosphere for improved ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties.
