This paper examines Bunhwang Wonhyo’s (617~686) and Muna Wonchuk’s (613~696) understanding of Yogācāra theory, focusing on the theories of Buddha-Nature and seed-nature. These two Silla scholar monks ―the most representative East Asian philosophers in the seventh century ―seemed to have had no opportunity to meet each other, even when they lived in the same country: no trace of influence or quotation from each other can be found throughout their literature. However, they show significant similarity considering that they share many commonalities in philosophy such as their theories on corpus of doctrine, doctrinal taxonomy, mind and consciousness, Buddha-Nature, and practice. In particular, the theories of Buddha-Nature and Seed-Nature they both focused on have developed into theories of attaining Buddhahood and the Buddhist practice, which became the two distinguishing issues in Buddhism. They both appreciated the philosophies of their era, but in terms of the theory of Buddha-Nature and the theory of Seed-Nature, they adhered to their own opinions, which differ from Paramārtha and Xuanzang’s theories. What is noteworthy is that they tried to establish a theory explaining that unenlightened beings and enlightened beings are not dual.
Both Wonhyo and Wonchuk appreciated all the Buddhist theories in their era under the concept of the One Mind or One Vehicle, which are different names for the Middle Way that is the core ideology of Buddha’s teaching. Wonchuk discussed the theories of Buddha-Nature and Seed-Nature on the basis of the ideology of the One Vehicle. His understanding of the One Vehicle was the Buddha vehicle and dharmakāya; and he summarized the Buddhist philosophies of his era in three points. First, the meaning of Paramārtha’s theory of Buddha-Nature is that it is three vehicles as skillful means within one vehicle in reality. Second, the distinction of Xuanzang’s five Seed-Natures is that various Seed-Nature is one vehicle as a skillful means, but three vehicles in reality. Third, reconciling these two perspectives leads to the ideology of the One Mind. Wonchuk considered the true original core of all things to be Buddha-Nature with two facets: essence and function. He then established the essence aspect of Buddha-Nature as one vehicle in reality but three vehicles as skillful means and the function aspect as one vehicle as a skillful means but three vehicles in reality. In this way, he reconciled two features of Buddha-Nature on the basis of the One Mind without going against the “Sutra on Understanding Profound and Esoteric Doctrine”.
Wonhyo, conversely, reconciled the theories of Buddha-Nature and Seed-Nature on the standpoint of the One Mind and Buddha-Nature. He considered that each of the theories on Buddha-Nature in East Asia insist that Buddha-Nature has dual characteristics as follows: future result and present cause; ultimate truth and relative truth; observer and phenomenal appearance; present consciousness and underlying consciousness, and so on. Among the six famous philosophers in his era, five of them took the stance that Buddha-Nature remains untainted even when it seems to be defiled in the phenomenal plane. The sixth philosopher took the stance that it does get defiled without becoming corrupted in the plane of reality. From that standpoint, Wonhyo merged Paramārtha’s concept of Buddha-Nature and Xuanzang’s concept of innate seeds, asserting that they can be combined without contradicting each other. He offered the concept of the union of Buddha-Nature and innate seeds and logically proved that they are not mutually contradictory.
Both Wonchuk and Wonhyo unified the theory of Buddha-Nature with the theory of five Seed-Natures: Wonchuk on the standpoint of the One Vehicle and Wonhyo from the standpoint of the One Mind. From the beginning, both the theory of Buddha-Nature and the theory of five Seed-Natures were intended to offer people the possibility of awakening to truth and becoming Buddha themselves. This led to the reconciliation of both, either on the standpoint of One Vehicle or One Mind. As a result, the theories of Wonchuk and Wonhyo became exemplary teachings in East Asian Buddhism and are now considered to be mainstream theory.
