"Amazons of the Avant-garde," the title of a 2000 exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum, New York, effectively captures dominantperceptions of female artists within the circle of the Constructivists during the 1920s. As John Bowlt establishes in the catalogue, western art critics and art historians from the 1910s onward invoked the image of Amazons, female warriors from Greek myth, in describing the ostensibly belligerent and gender-neutral women artists of the Russian Avant-garde. This paper aims to offer alternative readings of the female Constructivists' relationships to femininity and female sexuality by exploring Alexander Rodchenko's photographs of Varvara Stepanova, a photographer's wife; Rodchenko's photographs of Lili Brik, a writer, known as Vladmir Mayakovsky's lover during the late 1910s and the early 1920s; and, finally, Liubov Popova's clothing designs from 1923 and 1924. In so doing, the paper delves into well-known theories from the period on women's relationships with their bodies, fashion femininity, and masculinity, as expressed in works such as "Sartorial Super Ego" by J. C. Auger, author of Psychology of Sex(1930), and "Womanliness as Masquerade"(1929) by Joan Riviere.
Rodchenko's 1928 photograph of Stepanova, included in Daniel Giradin's 1999 Alexandre Rodchenko: la Femme enjeu("The Woman at Stake"), serves as a valuable counterexample to the dominant image of the gender-neutral female Constructivist. In the photograph, Stepanova wears heavy make-up and tight clothes that accentuate her voluminous figure, creating an impression that led Alexander Lavrentiev, her grandson, to call the image "Stepanova a la francaise. Stepanova's "explicit" representation of her femininity begs questions, however, especially considering her 1923 article "Today's Clothing is Production Clothing," wherein she expressed her distaste of any elements that might evoke traditional femininity in women's apparel. Rodchenko, too, remained hostile to women's fashion in Western consumer society, which he saw as opposed to (masculine) productivism and revolutionary zeal in the Soviet Union.
In examining the images of female Constructivists, this paper does not merely purport to point out the relatively feminine appearance of these artists; instead, Stepanova's 1928 photography can serve as a good reminder of the controversial nature of femininity and female sexuality in the Communist party. Throughout the communist regime under Lenin and Stalin, the unequal economic status of women was criticized and attacked, yet, as many historians advocated, women's difference or femininity be suppressed in order to accommodate the interests of a party dominated by male Bolsheviks. In this historical context, disparate attitudes toward female sexuality in relation to the emancipation of women among male and female Bolsheviks call for a careful re-examination of the myth of gender equity, as well as for scrutiny of how these female artists negotiated their sexualities within what historian Igor Kohn characterized as the sexless sexist culture of the Soviet Union. Indeed, Riviere's theory of womanliness as masquerade offered a new way of looking at femininity: not as a category permanently fixed onto the given body, but as a mask or tool with which these woman artists consistently worked and even challenged various gender and ideological divides (in the case of Brik's image and Popova's designs). Therefore, women Constructivists' appropriation of "femininity" and "female sexualities" offers valuable insights regarding traditional concepts of femininity and subjectivity-departing from the falsenotions of either gender equity (or gender neutrality) or a rigid gender binary in the 1920s Soviet Union.
