The purpose of this study is to investigate the social relationships experiences of persons with hearing disability in young adulthood. By using the photovoice as participatory action research method, this study has collected data from a target sample of 8 young participants and it has analysed their experiences of engaging in social relations. After conducting Thematic Analysis (TA) of Braun and Clarke(2006) on materials obtained from photovoice method and group discussions coupled with individual in-depth interviews the results pointed out 888 terms. The study revealed 5 main themes and 23 secondary themes after analysing the repetitive patterns and similar sentences and paragraphs from data provided by participants. The main themes include topics as “self-perception on engaging in social relationships”, “self-perception changed as a result of learning from social relationships in Bi-Bi society”, “deficiency factors hindering social relationships”, “social and emotional sense of distance experienced during untact period after COVID-19”, “pursuit of social relations and ideal relationship”. Each theme has revealed the following results.
First, by photovoice activities and group discussions the research participants have acquired insight into how they were meeting with ‘others’ within social relationships. Affected by deaf-muteness through their life constructing in social relationships in young adulthood, they embraced deaf identity when sharing a positive attitude about hearing impairment and met with "others" with pride as deafness, and it helped them develop a social relationship network among the deaf. Despite of having pride of being deaf-mute, they intended to act as a hearing person because they need to adapt to adapt to a hearing society. They have been feeling constant tension when engaging to talk in a shared conversation and they have experienced concerns and anxiety when fearing they might get excluded from that conversation. In addition, frustration resulted in repeated failures after attempts to entry into the hearing society. The negative experiences associated with interactions with hearing community have determined the youth deaf to develop a negative self-perception of hearing impairment which led to the decision to initiate a separate deaf community. On the one hand, the deaf youth found consolation from the scars left by the hearing community or experienced exclusion and marginalization as belonging to deaf community. In a final stance, the participants have felt an empty
loneliness and exclusion from separation into Bi-Bi community.
Secondly, participants have contemplated on their self-perception that changed as a
result of social relation experiences from Bi-Bi community. The deaf youth have expressed personal and social expectations while engaged in relations with society. However, they have been suppressed by non-deaf or they have been isolated as forgotten human beings. On the one hand, participants have displayed active determination in changing their own social status intentionally towards a desired society in order to understand and satisfy their own needs. Despite the fact that deaf youth have experienced social relationships’s crisis resulted from Bi-Bi society, they have acquired skills on how to establish relations between “I” and “you” without hurting each other through positive relation experiences with family, friends, mentors, and colleagues. Due to relations with close people, the deaf youths could
improve the empathetic communication skills and their own resilience and they could
set up good relations between the hearing vs deaf and the deaf vs deaf to achieve desired social awareness. They have expended their social network while engaged in several activities to satisfy their own personal needs associated with personal interests, purpose, beliefs, life meaning in adulthood etc. Various relation experiences have affected social identity formation and personal identity transformation of themselves and it has facilitated experiences of self-expansion.
Thirdly, research participants have indicated several factors that hinder engagement in social relationships. They have undergone offences from society emerged in negative stereotypes and discrimination from hearing society that took it for granted, and experienced social relation difficulties resulted from interaction with different individuals as individual characteristics. Despite the fact that these difficulties were caused by the individual factor of the deaf, they also became an obstacle that discouraged the efforts to develop good social relationships considering environmental contexts likely the social structure, sociocultural factors. Young participants have had the impression that they are excluded by the mainstream society because of mutual exclusion resulted from perceived Bi-Bi community as engaged in language, norms, culture etc. In particular, the youth have experienced differences in language, generation gap, stratification of the hearing and deaf in hearing society, spoken language and sign language in deaf society, , and finally
experienced exclusion from Bi-Bi society. On the top of that, the youngsters have come across differences in values and beliefs between the generations inside the deaf community and they have experienced conflicts and mutual exclusion among the deaf. In the same context, the participants have undergone crisis of confrontation and conflict depending on the level of deaf impairment, and features associated with psychologic and emotional level.
Fourth, the social and emotional sense of distance of research participants has aggravated during COVID-19 period. The spacio-temporal sense of distance between “I” and “workplace”, “work colleagues” has worsened because of transition to work at home which affected the sense of belonging to a workplace. With the implementation of enforcement measures to keep social distancing during COVID-19 pandemic period, the participants have experienced a feeling of non-existence affecting the proximity and unrelated social connection. Since health and security of individual and community has to be secured participants has to be minimized contact with other individuals or withheld and given up individual needs of the social relationships. For all of these reasons, they reduced the frequency of connection between ‘I’ and ‘other person’, and the emotional exchange that could be experienced through social connection disappeared. Although from the technical point of view, the connection through untact methods is possible, the participants emphasized that the feeling of exclusion got worse when the communication switched to on-tact method. The deaf youth have felt an awkward sense of distance and a sort of worry and anxiety connected with new ways of interpersonal relationships and communication with colleagues and hearing superiors who switch office and work at home. In addition, the deaf youth could not embrace the un-tact empathy of exchanged information and emotions focusing on text messages or instant messages through internet after COVID-19. The participants encountered difficulties in presenting and talking with “others” following the communication methods of new normals after
COVID-19. Thus, in terms of sharing human emotions and empathetic understanding
through untact methods the social relationships’s gap has increased.
Fifth, the research participants have structured their own effective relation status through experiencing social relationships. The youth have developed their relation map in time and their trust bond have paved the idea of good relation. In this respect, a deaf person with appropriate social relationship represented real self who freed from false self immersed in social evaluation, who can reveal natural self-perception, who can share true self with accepted sense of stability and mutual support towards others. On the one hand, by engaging in effective social relationships deaf youth expect to structure the relationships upon human capital, based on mutual trust and emphatic support, with opportunities to share their knowledge for self-development and enhanced life. In addition, despite the fact that the impacts of COVID-19 cannot be ended at once they hope the future normality in
everyday social relations in Post COVID-19 period. On the other hand, while the deaf youths refrain from direct contact with “others”because of latent anxiety then the change urges social relationships full with attention and care based on altruistic sense and behaviour towards each other.
The research has pointed out the theoretical implications derived from Bi-Bi social perspective and social inclusion perspective of deaf youth based on this study results. Considering the scarcity of research on deaf people and the first application of photovoice method on deaf youth the current study implies several academic implications to the methodology of research. In addition, investigation of deaf youth has pointed out the dual nature of social relationships in Bi-Bi community: the positive social relation experiences that require to be increased, and negative social relation experiences that must get alleviated. At the same time, considering the social crisis induced by the Corona-19 pandemic period, the current research presents practical implications with direct focus on the task to reduce the social and emotional social distances experienced by deaf youth.
