The primary objective of this study is to propose effective method for the production of original musical film music in South Korea. An in-depth exploration was conducted related to the production of musical film music focusing on two musical films‘Just Wanna Say I Love You’and‘When the Ocean Met a Whale,’in which a direct role was assumed as a music director and composer. Deviating from the conventional approach which confines itself to theoretical analysis, this study aimed to focus on analysis of the actual production setting conducive to a practical examination. The envisioned goal of this research is to provide specific recommendations for efficient method and process in the production of musical film music to directors, music directors, students majoring in related fields and other participants interested in creating musical films.
To achieve the research objective, a multiple case study methodology was deployed, selecting three cases for examination. The first and second cases chosen were the South Korean original musical films‘Just Wanna Say I Love You’ and ‘When the Ocean Met a Whale’, in which a direct participation was involved as a music director and composer. Through these two cases,an in-depth understanding of music production process and method in musical films was to be gained in relation to the narrative of the movies. For this purpose, the study presented and analyzed the overall process of music production performed in real-life production settings, with details of each stage.
The third case involved a workshop on musical film production, targeting film major students. In contrast to the previous two cases where music was composed based on the film's script, the third case involved the production of three musical films, namely, "I Am," "We're Still Us," and "A Happy Day," using existing songs as a foundation. The main focus was to scrutinize how the narratives of the student-created works differed from the originals and what specific criteria each team considered to select and record the songs.
Based on the in-depth analysis of these musical film music production cases, conclusions are as follows :
Firstly, the workflow for musical film music production consisted of eight stages. The lyrics work for the theme song commenced during the development production stage of the musical film script, leading to the recording of guide vocals for the theme song incorporating the finalized lyrics.
Secondly, rhymes were emphasized in important lyrics to accentuate the movement of the melody in the composition of the theme song for a musical film. The repetitive use of rhymes served to leave a lasting impression on the audience while facilitating the articulate expression of the characters’ emotions, thereby effectively conveying the important message of the theme song.
Thirdly, significant emphasis and special attention were accorded during the recording and correction process of the theme song in the musical film music production. The quality of the actors' vocal performances in the scenes ultimately hinged upon the quality of the recording. It was therefore crucial to ensure that the actors sang in harmony with emotions and sentiments of the characters in the film during the recording process.
Fourthly, during the vocal recording of the theme song for a musical film, collaborative engagement among the music director, director, and vocal coach was essential for effective directing. The cooperative participation of the director and vocal coach in directing process increased the objectivity and accuracy of the vocal recording.
Fifthly, the final sound mixing of the musical film focused on achieving a natural balance between the theme song and film dialogues, the two of which constitutes the most crucial sound elements in conveying the narrative of a musical film. Therefore, this emphasis on accentuating the balance between the theme song and film dialogues in the final sound mixing stage stood as an integral component of the musical film music production process.
Sixthly, producing the theme song for a musical film using existing completed music significantly shortened the overall production timeline of the entire musical film. Given the potential for the production of music to be elongated when composing based on the script, utilizing existing songs offered an alternative avenue to expedite music production in the overarching musical film production.
Overall, the implications of this research are as follows:
Firstly, the study furnished a concrete demonstration of the actual process and method involved in the production of original musical film music in South Korea. Thus, a substantial contribution has been made to establishing the foundational framework for practical guidelines for musical film music production.
Further, considering the paucity of original Korean musical films to date, this research analyzing music and narrative of domestically created original musical films in a step-by–step manner as per holds profound academic significance as a pioneering endeavor.
As a whole, this research holds pivotal value in proffering a practical and specific workflow for musical film music production. Additionally, the detailed delineation of the work process and efficient methods derived from various case studies significantly enriched the current field of musical film music production.
