We have entered an era where sustainable development is emphasized due to resource depletion, environmental crises, and other challenges. Therefore, there is a need to focus more on sustainable development and carbon neutrality in the utilization of environmental resources to achieve the realization of consumer well-being. This can be accomplished through the transition of consumers towards sustainable production and consumption.
Recognizing the urgency for measures against modes of transportation contributing to environmental pollution, electric vehicles have been proposed. However, despite government efforts to promote and ensure the widespread adoption of electric vehicles, the market share of electric cars worldwide has not reached high levels.
In light of this, this study aims to complement the low adoption rate of electric vehicles to promote the diffusion of sustainable consumer culture. The analysis focuses on factors within the perceived consumer barriers to electric vehicles, examines the levels of consumer barriers, investigates the impact of consumer uncertainty aversion tendencies and automotive involvement on consumer functional and psychological barriers. Additionally, the study explores the influence of consumer functional and psychological barriers on innovation resistance.
Notably, this research holds significance by not only examining perceived consumer functional barriers to electric vehicles but also delving into consumer psychological barriers. This encompasses barriers that arise not only from surface-level technological or risk-related concerns but also from consumers' natural, subconscious psychological reactions that they may not directly perceive.
Conducted with the purpose of understanding perceived consumer barriers to electric vehicles and examining their impact on innovation resistance, this study involved a survey of 500 consumers aged 20 to 60 who currently do not have intentions to purchase electric vehicles.
The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, perceived consumer functional barriers and consumer psychological barriers to electric vehicles can be more specifically divided than the consumer barriers included in the innovation resistance model proposed by Ram & Sheth (1989). Subdimensions of consumer functional barriers include function usage barriers, infrastructure usage barriers, value barriers, physical risk barriers, and economic risk barriers. Subdimensions of consumer psychological barriers include tradition barriers and image barriers. This suggests a more detailed breakdown of barriers compared to those included in the innovation resistance model by Ram & Sheth (1989), indicating that the characteristics of electric vehicles allow for a finer segmentation of barriers.
Secondly, among the consumer functional barriers, infrastructure usage barriers and economic risk barriers were perceived the highest. Therefore, there appears to be a need for an expansion of electric vehicle charging stations and a reduction in the cost of electric vehicles. On the other hand, among the consumer psychological barriers, tradition barriers were perceived the highest. This implies discomfort with unfamiliar products due to the innovative nature of electric vehicles. Consequently, efforts should be made to emphasize the advantages that consumers can perceive in electric vehicles compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and convey information accordingly.
Thirdly, it was observed that uncertainty aversion tendencies positively influence both consumer functional barriers and consumer psychological barriers, with a particularly significant impact on physical risk barriers within consumer functional barriers and all subdimensions of consumer psychological barriers, including tradition barriers and image barriers. Furthermore, females exhibited higher levels of uncertainty aversion tendencies than males, and females had a greater influence on innovation resistance. Ultimately, consumer barriers arise from uncertainty, and due to the significant psychological impact, efforts are needed to reduce consumer uncertainty. In this regard, the communication role of governments and businesses appears crucial, and there is a need to provide consumers with more detailed, trustworthy information about electric vehicles.
Fourthly, automotive involvement was found to have a greater impact on consumer functional barriers compared to consumer psychological barriers. Specifically, it was observed to influence value barriers, economic risk barriers, and physical risk barriers, with males exhibiting higher levels of automotive involvement. Additionally, among consumer functional barriers, males were found to have a more significant impact on function usage barriers, infrastructure usage barriers, value barriers, and economic risk barriers. Significant gender differences were observed only in consumer functional barriers, suggesting that males, with higher automotive involvement, actively seek information on various factors related to automobiles, leading to a more pronounced perception of negative factors. However, regarding innovation resistance, females exhibited a higher level, indicating that the perceived level of consumer barriers does not necessarily correlate with innovation resistance, especially concerning electric vehicles.
Fifthly, image barriers, value barriers, function usage barriers, and economic risk barriers, in that order, were found to influence innovation resistance. Firstly, as automobiles are considered complex products, purchasing them without a complete understanding is challenging. Therefore, the brand image and overall image of the electric vehicle play a crucial role in facilitating the purchase. Secondly, as consumers are more familiar with internal combustion engine vehicles than electric vehicles, the latter must provide greater value compared to traditional vehicles to lower resistance. Thirdly, technological advancements are necessary to address inconveniences such as short driving range, long charging times, and battery lifespan associated with electric vehicles. Lastly, the economic risk barrier of electric vehicles influences innovation resistance, emphasizing the importance of pricing, especially in challenging economic situations where automobiles are not considered essential commodities. The sensitivity of consumers to pricing is heightened, considering the economic constraints.
Sixthly, among consumer psychological barriers, it was revealed that image barriers have the most significant impact on innovation resistance. This suggests a substantial influence of consumer psychological resistance towards electric vehicles. In contrast to consumer functional barriers, which are barriers that consumers can easily perceive through sight or direct experience, this study highlights the significant impact of consumer psychological barriers, emphasizing the need to focus on psychological reactions that consumers may not directly recognize.
Based on this study, the following recommendations are proposed for future research. Firstly, despite targeting consumers with no intention to purchase electric vehicles, the overall perceived levels of consumer functional barriers and consumer psychological barriers are not high. This could be inferred as a result of the existence of the midpoint of 3 on the scale. It is suggested that future research could provide clearer results by using a 4-point Likert scale for analysis.
Secondly, while this study broadly examined barriers as function usage barriers, infrastructure usage barriers, value barriers, physical risk barriers, economic risk barriers, tradition barriers, and image barriers, it did not delve into the specific factors corresponding to each consumer barrier. Considering the characteristics of electric vehicles, a more detailed examination of the specific factors influencing each consumer barrier could lead to more concrete research. Therefore, future research could gain a more in-depth understanding by identifying detailed factors influencing each consumer barrier related to electric vehicles. In particular, a detailed examination of consumers' perceived risks regarding electric vehicles could provide a deeper understanding.
