Hierarchical norms were quite dominant in Korean society after liberation due to the impact of Confucian values and military dictatorship. That society was a typical patriarchal society that was a combination of androcentrism and familism. The rapid industrialization driven by military dictatorship contributed to national economic growth, but that rather resulted in strengthening the hierarchical and patriarchal social system that forced contemporary people to be obedient. Likewise, a lot of movies were produced from androcentric perspectives in the film community of the 1960s and the 1970s. It's not until the late 1990s that there appeared movies produced from diverse angles due to the IMF financial crisis. The purpose of this study is to examine two selected movies in an attempt to shed light on the barriers of patriarchy and the frustrated desires of the female subjects in Korean society. One movie is Happy End (1999) that described the crisis of patriarchy in the end of the century, and the other was My Wife Got Married (2008), which dealt with polyandry in the age that suffered from long-term economic depression. Basically, the two films centered around the subjectivity of the female characters yet ironically ended up putting them into patriarchy once again in the end.
The movie Happy End is provocative in that it depicted the woman who had just been a sexual object to man as the subject who sought after the realization of her own desires through adultery. The head of her household was described as financially incompetent to represent the breakdown of patriarchal values, the change of marital roles and the collapse of masculinity both at home and in society. In fact, however, this is ultimately regarded as a film to reinforce patriarchal ideology for several reasons. The wife was murdered in the end, and her maternity was overly described as distorted to the extent that it looked unnatural and that she was obliged to be punished.
The other film My Wife Got Married looked at the extramarital affair and sexual freedom of the woman in a new light, and reflected the progressive flow of the times that viewed man and woman equally in terms of adultery. The message of the movie that bigamy could be legalized through the family created by polyandry showed the possibility of alternative to conventional patriarchy. However, there were still patriarchal barriers and the limitations of the realization of the female subject's desire in this movie. That is, the family formed by polyandry finally left Korea and settled in a foreign country, which could be defined as a defective ending, and patriarchal marital roles thoroughly remained unchanged. In addition, the paternal ideology that was built on blood relationship was still emphasized.
In a word, the female characters in the movie of the late 1990s titled Happy End and the other film of the late 2000s titled My Wife Got Married, who were respectively named Bora and Inha, had something in common: the liberation of suppressed female sexuality. They were progressive in that they defied traditional marital life and man-woman relationship and enjoyed sexual freedom, and they showed that Korea passed through modernization to enter into a new era, and that patriarchy was severely challenged and could eventually be collapsed. In effect, however, the films failed to depart from the robust value system of conservative and closed patriarchy in that the subjectivity of the female characters was guaranteed only when they performed the typical roles of wife, daughter-in-law and mother that were defined by patriarchy.
