The weak ferromagnetism with high transition temperature over 600 K has been found in CaB6 after electron doping which changes a semiconducting state of the parent material to a conducting state. Spectrum, shift, linewidth, spin-spin relaxation rate, and spin-lattice relaxation rate of 11B nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) for several CaB6 single crystals have been measured to find out microscopic evidence and the mechanism of this novel ferromagnetism by comparing those NMR data for ferromagnetic and parent specimens of several compositions; Ca0.99B6, Ca0.995La0.005B6, Ca0.99La0.01B6, Ca(B0.99513C0.005)6, andCaB6-δ.
The nuclear spin of 11B in the ground state is I = 3/2 and so the 11B NMR spectrum usually consists of 3 peaks with the intensity ratio of 3:4:3 in electron-nuclear quadrupolar interaction. The strongest resonance line is called a central peak and the two symmetrically separated resonance lines are called satellite peaks.
However, CaB6 have six boron sites from one boron octahedron at the body center of its simple cubic structure and the number of 11B NMR peaks can vary from 1 to 7 depending on the orientation of magnetic field relative to the principal axes of electric field gradient (EFG) tensor. In particular, when an external magnetic field is parallel to one of the crystalline axes, since the principal axes of EFG tensor at the boron sites are the crystalline axes, the principal axis is parallel to the external magnetic field for 2 boron sites whereas that is perpendicular for 4 boron sites, consequently showing 5 peaks with parallel and perpendicular satellite peaks.
On top of the expected number of NMR peaks depending on the angle between the EFG tensor and magnetic field, an extra structure is observed for both parallel and perpendicular satellite peaks; each parallel and perpendicular satellite peak consists of two lines. This clearly indicates that the CaB6 single crystals have two different values of νQ, which in turn confirms the local distortion of boron octahedra. Because this double-line structure of satellite peaks is observed for both of the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic CaB6, it hardly seems to be directly related to the ferromagnetic moment. But the possibility that the structural peculiarity in the CaB6 may be one of the necessary conditions for the formation of spontaneous magnetization cannot be excluded.
The 11B NMR spectra for CaB6 single crystals have been analyzed based on the coexistence of parallel and perpendicular satellite peaks with the double-line structure. From the frequency positions of the satellite peaks in spectra, the 11B NMR shifts are calculated to be typically several tens ppm and the shift data for various samples show no relation to the weak ferromagnetism.
The 11B NMR linewidths for the parent CaB6 specimens are broader than those for the ferromagnetic CaB6 crystals. The ratio of linewidth is about 0.85, and it agrees with the result of the magnetic susceptibility. The 11B NMR linewidths of the central peaks are broader, about 1.6 times, than those of the satellite peaks.
Spin-spin relaxation rates have been measured at room temperature and low temperature about 4.5 K. The relaxation times are in the range of tens to hundreds milliseconds for the ferromagnetic and the parent specimens. T2 of ferromagnetic crystals using 3NB (99.9% boron purity) is larger than that of paramagnetic samples using 6NB (99.9999% boron purity), because the electronic spins in the paramagnetic 6NB samples are fluctuating while the motion of the spins in the ferromagnetic 3NB samples is suppressed.
Spin-lattice relaxation rates have been measured for the central resonance. The measurements have been performed with the progressive saturation method to avoid very long acquisition time due to the long T1. The faster motion of the spins above T0 ~ 10 K makes T1 rates of both ferromagnetic and paramagnetic samples independent of temperature. The 1/T1 of ferromagnetic 3NB sample decreases as the temperature decreases below T0. In the slow motion regime of the spins, because the correlation function of the spins is proportional to the inverse of the correlation time, the 1/T1 is proportional to the square of the temperature.
The small but consistent difference in the 11B NMR linewidth, T2 and T1 between the ferromagnetic (3NB) and the paramagnetic (6NB) samples are analyzed and compared by using several model calculations for two cases, intrinsic and impurity origins. The final results suggest that the 11B NMR data supports the scenario based on the intrinsic origin.
