The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct the influence of Soviet Russian literature on Korean writers in the 1930s. I focused on Alexander Fadeev, who was a writer of Rout, The Last of the Udege and The Young Guard. Fadeev, as a former guerilla member of the Far East Soviet Republic in the Russia Revolution period, had a close relaions with Korean Russians in Primorsky area and represented his experience of Koreans in his novels. Fadeev was a friend of the Korean leader Choi Jae-hyung’s family in Russia, and he lived next to novelist Cho Myung-hui, who immigrated to Soviet Union in early 1930s. As a writer, Fadeev depicted Korean immigrants and Korean partisan group in his Rout and The Last of the Udege, which Korean readers embraced with enthusiasm. Fadeev’s novels were translated into Japanese around 1930, and were widely read among Koreans as well as Japaneses, and other contemporary Soviet writers such as Serapimovich, Gladkov and Sholohov also attained considerable influence through Japanese translation. In the 1910s and 1920s, Russian writers such as Tolstoy and Dostoevsky had a great influence in Korea, and in the 1920s and 30s, Soviet Russian writers’ literature was distributed and accepted as a “new world literature.” It is also worth while to remember that Soviet literature at this time resonated with colonial writers as a “world literature on the periphery.” Some writers were set in a large city in traditional Russian territory like Gorky, but Fadeev, Serafimovich, Gladkov, and Sholohov were welcomed as “writers of the Far East” or “writers of Kozak.” This ‘participation from the periphery’ was the political and cultural driving force that formed Soviet Russia, and ‘colonial socialism’ was an important factor to support Soviet literature as a ‘new world literature’.
