Reading is a foundation for learning and a skill that is essential for daily life, and reading ability is an essential element in educating students with mild developmental disabilities. Reading consists of reading fluency and reading comprehension, and through previous studies, it has been proven that repeated reading and meaning-centered pause-sentence are effective for reading ability. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of reading with effective meaning-centered pause-sentence and repeated reading on the reading ability of students with mild developmental disabilities. As a research question, first, what is the effect of meaning-centered pause-sentence on the reading fluency of students with mild developmental disabilities? Second, what is the effect of repeated reading instruction using meaning-centered pause-sentence on the reading fluency of students with mild developmental disabilities? Third, what is the effect of meaning-centered pause-sentence on the reading comprehension of students with mild developmental disabilities? Fourth, what is the effect of repeated reading instruction using meaning-centered pause-sentence on the reading comprehension of students with mild developmental disabilities? to be.
In order to investigate the effect on the reading ability of students with mild developmental disabilities, a study was conducted on two students with mild developmental disabilities in a special class (ZOOM for online learning) at D elementary school within the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education K. This study was conducted for a total of 6 weeks from the third week of April, 2021 to the fourth week of May, 2021, and was conducted 5 sessions per week for 40 minutes per session using class time and after-school time. The experimental design was designed and implemented in 4 stages: baseline, intervention 1, intervention 2, and maintenance as an intervention change design (conditional change design-ABC design).
The material for reading instruction was extracted from the 4th grade Korean language activities and the type of text was fairy tale and made into 40±10 word lengths. In order to check the generalization of reading fluency, the BASA formative evaluation data was 40±10 word long BASA reading materials were produced. In addition, referring to previous studies, a teaching-learning guidance plan for meaning-centered pause-sentence instruction, repeated reading teaching-learning guidance using meaning-centered pause-sentence, and spacing reading guidance strategy were planned and taught. Reading fluency was measured by the number of correctly read syllables per minute, and reading comprehension was measured by the researcher using reading materials and BASA reading materials. The items were evaluated for 5 minutes with 2 items of factual understanding and 2 items of inferential understanding, with 2 points for factual understanding and 3 points for inferential understanding, out of a total of 10 points. In addition, in order to examine the effect of intervention on reading comprehension of standardized tests, raw scores were compared by examining blanking in BASA reading before and after intervention. In order to verify the reliability and fidelity of this study, the suitability of the questions and the experimental results were reviewed with two upper grade supervisors. The results are as follows.
First, reading fluency was improved by reading with meaning-centered pause-sentence for all of the target students. Second, reading fluency was improved by repeated reading using meaning-centered pause-sentence for all target students. Third, there was no effect on the reading comprehension of all the target students by reading the meaning-centered pause-sentence. Fourth, the reading comprehension of all target students was improved through repeated reading using meaning-centered pause-sentence.
The meaning of these results is that, first, the systematic reading instruction method helped to improve the reading fluency of students with mild developmental disabilities who lack learning strategies, and second, fairy tales produced as reading materials were effective by increasing the interest and familiarity of the students. Third, it can be said that it can be said that the effect that the target students enjoyed participating in the experiment was recognized as a special and fun activity rather than a learning activity. Fourth, the fact that there was no reading intervention effect due to Meaning-Centered Pause-Sentence in reading comprehension supports the results of previous studies that a clear improvement in reading comprehension cannot be expected with short-time education. Fifth, it can be seen that the reading comprehension results are related to the length of the reading material, the familiarity of the subject and content, and the difficulty and validity of the evaluation items.
The limitations of this study are as follows. First, since this study was conducted for about 6 weeks with two students with mild developmental disabilities, it is difficult to generalize the results of the study to all students with mild developmental disabilities. Second, in this study, it was not possible to obtain a stable value by measuring the baseline short, and as a result, there was no clear difference from the intervention. Third, to develop the reading comprehension test tool, it was reviewed by two upper-grade supervisors, but it is not standardized, so it is difficult to say that the correct reading comprehension ability was measured. Fourth, there is no formative evaluation-type test tool to examine the effects of standardized tests on reading comprehension, so there is a limit to interpreting only the results of the BASA reading test before and after the intervention. Lastly, it is difficult to say that the texts used as reading materials in this study have an effect of mediating on other types of texts because they consist only of fairy tales from 4th grade Korean textbooks.
Therefore, in the follow-up study, first, among students with mild developmental disabilities diagnosed as reading disabilities, it is hoped that a study will be conducted with the intervention of reading at a meaning-centered pause-sentence targeting various disability areas and grades. Second, it is hoped that a standardized test that can evaluate reading comprehension at the level of formative evaluation will be developed. Third, it is necessary to study whether repeated reading instruction using meaning-centered pause-sentence is effective in improving reading ability even in group instruction rather than single subject research.
Lastly, I hope that research on various interventions that can improve the reading ability of students with mild developmental disabilities continues.
