Various harmful substances flowing in from rivers contaminate the freshwater and sedimentary ecosystems, causing changes to the global environment, including the aquatic environment. In order to understand the aquatic ecosystem as a whole, it is important to check not only water quality but also various physicochemical environmental factors, including heavy metals in sediments accumulated in riverbeds. Unlike water quality, which reflects changes in the characteristics of the river environment over a short period of time. Compared to freshwater ecosystem, heavy metals in sedimentary ecosystem show little change in time and space and are high in content, which can be a factor in evaluating sediment pollution (Thornton, 1983). In particular, heavy metals in sediments are highly likely to be leached into water bodies or precipitated within sediments due to physical and chemical changes, and thus have a great influence on the aquatic and sedimentary ecosystems (Alloway et al., 1988).
Excessive fine-grained sediment is a major cause of river damage that is often associated with biological damage in river ecosystems worldwide (Chutter, 1969 , Ryan, 1991 , Fossati et al., 2001 , Paulsen et al., 2008 ), and directly or indirectly affecting all biomes, including benthic macroinvertebrates. (Wood and Armitage, 1997, Suttle et al., 2004, Jensen et al., 2009, Jones et al., 2012).
Physicochemical analysis, which measures the concentration of environmental factors, has several disadvantages, such as results that may vary depending on the point of the survey and changes over time (Hamza-Chaffai, 2014). Physical and chemical environmental factors provide only an overview of the current situation in the field, while water pollution occurs continuously, so evaluation using them is less effective in representing the environmental condition (Li et al., 2012).
Benthic macroinvertebrates are the most widely used indicators in the biological assessment of aquatic ecosystems (Rosenburg and Resh, 1993, Hering et al., 2004) and area (Hawkins et al., 2000, Hargett et al., 2007). It is commonly used to assess aquatic ecosystems at state (Ode et al., 2008) and national scales (Wright et al., 1993, Smith et al., 1999, Paulsen et al., 2008). In addition, it is at the center of the food chain in the aquatic ecosystem, and is an effective indicator organism due to its taxonomic diversity, diverse feeding habits, and distribution in various microhabitats (Hubler et al., 2016), and has a relatively long lifespan compared to other biological communities. Therefore, it can indicate comprehensive environmental conditions such as pollution within the ecosystem accumulated over a long period of time (Hawkes, 1979, Cairns and Pratt, 1993, Hodkinson and Jackson, 2005).
In Korea, most studies related to biological evaluation of sedimentary ecosystems were conducted on species-level ecotoxicity studies and only showed effects on some environmental factors (Hong et al., 2019, Seok et al., 2022, Won and Gang , 2017). For biological evaluation of the domestic sedimentary ecosystem, the Benthic macroinvertebrates Sediment Index (BSI) was developed by examining the tolerance of various environmental factors for the benthic macroinvertebrate community living in freshwater sediments (Kim et al., 2019). Overseas, the Olichochaete Index of Sediment Bioindication (IOBS), developed in France, used only oligochaeta as indicator species and was created to evaluate heavy metal contamination in sediments (Rosso et al., 1994; Rosso, 1995; Prygiel et al., 2000; AFNOR, 2002). In the case of BSI, comparison was not possible because the identification levels of the taxa used in this study did not match, and the identification level for Chironomidae was limited. When IOBS, a French index, was applied to the biological evaluation of domestic sedimentary ecosystems, the correlation with sediment environmental factors was low and no significance was found, making it difficult to apply to the biological evaluation of domestic sedimentary ecosystems.
The investigation of this study was conducted at 60 survey points, including rivers corresponding to the Han River, Nakdong River, and Geum River systems, lakes, industrial complexes, and urban streams, as described by Kim et al. (2018) was investigated using the method suggested. NH3-N, AVS, heavy metals, TOC, and fine-grained streambed ratio were selected as physical and chemical environmental factors of freshwater sediments.
In order to solve the multicollinearity problem of each environmental factor and to confirm the correlation, principal component analysis was conducted, and the Sediment Quality Index (SQI) was calculated using the PC score and eigenvalue (explanatory power) of each Axis calculated through this. In addition, clustering analysis and canonical correspondence analysis were conducted to confirm the appearance characteristics of clustering groups according to sediment environmental factors. As a result of clustering analysis, annelids were classified into four clustering groups, chironomids were classified into six groups, and other taxa were classified into six groups. It was confirmed that the biota showed different trends according to the environmental factors of each sediment.
In order to analyze the appearance characteristics of common species commonly used for evaluation, five annelids dominant in sedimentary ecosystems and four chironomids were selected
The optimal probability distribution model was selected to show the continuous appearance characteristics of each environmental factor. Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri showed a wide range of appearance characteristics and was resistant to all sedimentary environmental factors. When compared with Chironomus flaviplumus and Polypedilum sp., but it was found to be relatively sensitive compared to the annelids species.
Based on the results of this study, 185 species of benthic macroinvertebrates were selected as indicator species, and resistance index and index weight for each taxon were proposed.
KBSI examined the tolerance of each taxon by identifying the species of the fungus among the evaluation indexes using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicator species in Korea. In addition, KBSI showed high correlation with sediment environmental factors and high significance compared to the hydraulic community index and the IOBS index in France, showing the possibility of discrimination and application to the evaluation of sedimentary ecosystems. On the other hand, although extremely polluted urban streams and industrial streams were selected, the number of polluted sediment environmental factors data was small, and field surveys on various types of water stations were insufficient. Therefore, continuous field surveys should be conducted to evaluate the environmental conditions of various domestic sedimentary ecosystems.
Further follow-up studies should be conducted to select additional indicator taxa that can represent the status of sedimentary quality, and if the discrimination and reliability of the Korean Benthic Sediment quality Index (KBSI) are improved by conducting field surveys of sedimentary ecosystems with various pollution conditions, a new evaluation method system for domestic sedimentary ecosystems will be established.
(Wood and Armitage, 1997, Suttle et al., 2004, Jensen et al., 2009, Jones et al., 2012).
(Hawkes, 1979, Cairns and Pratt, 1993, Hodkinson and Jackson, 2005).
