Language is deeply intertwined in the culture and society where it is used, and it has multiple layers of meaning depending on the sociocultural context in which it is used. Regarding reading in a language, it involves dialogues between the reader, the text, the author, and the world around them. A piece of literary work has a rich reservoir of metaphors, rhythms, and rhymes as well as it complex sociocultural meanings. Such richness is hardly contained in a textbook in which language is controlled to fit a certain standard. Grounded in the position that learning to read a language necessarily involves sociocultural contexts, this study aims at discovering the patterns of book discussion among 5th grade-level students and if the book discussion improves the students’ reading ability. This study also investigates the teachers’ perception about book discussion.
8 groups of 5th grade-level students from 4 classes were selected for the study. The 4 teachers of each class were also participants of the study. 7 books were selected that fit the 5th grade-level English curriculum, the syllabus of the English course, the students’ interest as well as the literary quality and characteristics of the book. The book club proceeded as the follows: The teacher read the book aloud to the class with a mini lesson on some words and expressions. Then the students read it aloud in their groups. After they finished reading with their group, they discussed the book for about 10 minutes. They worked on a worksheet packet after the discussion. They were guided to use various questions and strategies to understand the text and to connect the text to their personal life, the world, their background knowledge, etc.
The data sources were the video and audio-taped discussions, the reading evaluations that were conducted at the beginning and at the end of the semester, individual interviews with the participant students and the teachers. The degree of text interpretation was examined by looking at the coherence of discussion (Almasi, O’Flahavan, & Arya,2001).
The findings of the study shows that most of the discussion topics were loosely related to one another, which indicated that students did not know how to weave their talk in a dialogue. Thus, their discussion apparently looked as if they listed their answers one after another. Most students in Ms. D’s 2 groups had strong ability in English, but both groups did not show an active engagement in making dialogical interpretation of the text. To the contrary, Ms. A’s group number 2 and Ms. B’s group number 2, who had low ability in English, showed a progress in engaging in a dialogue. Most of them also showed improvement in reading fluency in their 2nd reading evaluation. They found reading an English book could be fun and enjoyable: They also developed confidence in English as their ideas were responded and accepted by other students in their group. The teachers mentioned that some of the low-ability students’ development of positive attitude in book club transferred to the regular English lessons.
The teachers’ perception of the book club showed a change. In the beginning, they had an apprehension that students may not learn by talking about books without the teacher’s direct instruction. However, they learned that they needed to be patient with the time that learning takes to happen, that students enjoyed the experience of talking about books with their peers without a pressure to "learn"words, and that talking about books had a positive influence in lower-ability students in terms of their motivation and interest in English.
This study suggests that book club can be adapted to meet learners of diverse ability levels. It also suggests that book clubs need to be implemented in various classroom situations so that context- specific ways of managing a successful book club can be developed and delivered to the teachers who are going to implement book club in their classrooms.
