The aim of this thesis is to analyze the concept of ‘the Other’, that which is separate from one’s ‘being’ or ‘self’, as well as examining how this can be understood through creative processes. The author has researched two different forms of the Other, as something that is unfamiliar: that which is found within oneself, and that which is found outside. The Other is an important point of discourse discussed by countless philosophers and artists during and following the second world war, including Emmanuel Levinas and Gilles Deleuze, Sigmund Freud(the unconscious), Julia Kristeva(abjection), Mikhail Bakhtin(Carnivalism), George Bataille, Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, and others.
The researcher analyzes the Other as it appears through his own creative processes. To facilitate a closer examination, the initial focus is set on the societal phenomena used to communicate with Others. This includes phenomena such as blind faith in religion, the creation and consumption of imagery in the big data era, the cycle of oxidation and reduction of such images, and the positive and negative effects brought about by the technological advantages made by human kind and whether those advances are pushing us forward or holding us back. In researching a more inclusive meaning of the Other, the focus was placed on the “hand”. In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the hand is defined as “the terminal part of the vertebrate forelimb when modified (as in humans) as a grasping organ.” In this definition, it can be seen that the word is generally applied exclusively to humans. Having hands with opposable thumbs has always been used as an important factor in setting humans apart from animals, so the hand can also be said to represent our awareness of ourselves. We use our hands, filled with limitless potential, to create situations through which we can more thoroughly consider the character of human kind. This research attempts to find ways in which Others are comforted, accepted, repressed, or restricted in these creations.
Next, focus is placed on how creators project themselves onto an object in attempts objectify and Otherize the self. For example, the author of this thesis has seen himself in the grasses pushing up through cracks in cement, and felt estranged from himself. In a similar context, casting a part of one’s own body for later photographic purposes can also be seen as the same type of equivalence, an attempt to Otherize the self.
The author proceeds to find ‘Others’ through both physical and abstract “places”. Procuring a so-called ticket to such places, ones we recognize as those for ‘Others’, allows us to speak of the relationship between ourselves and those Others. Thus we begin recognizing in our everyday lives that our own form reflected in objects such as showroom windows are yet another type of ‘Other.’.
Next, in order to speak of ourselves and our Otherness, the researcher examines both the Heterotopia, a space which exists in reality but has slipped from the collective consciousness, and the 'edges' with which we are all familiar. Finally, through his own work in the visual arts, the author expresses the processes of finding such Others, such as the unfamiliar ego hidden within the ego, which pushes to make itself known in the unconscious space within ourselves.
The researcher follows his creative process to examine how a creator discovers these Others, both internally and externally. This process is explained as a personal struggle to converse with the Other while circulating interest between internal and external factors, as shown in the researcher's mosaic works. It can be said that the beginning of understanding this discourse on Otherness, with which all can sympathize and which all will experience as long as humanity exists, lies in the cognition and acceptance of the Otherness within and surrounding one as an individual.
