According to Hans Ku¨ng, Augustine created the first monumental theology of history in Christianity, which had an influence deep into the whole of medieval Western theology and the theology of the Reformation, up to the threshold of the modern secularization of history. On the other hand, for Robert A. Markus, Augustine wrote no historical works, either in our modem sense or in the sense in which "history" would have been understood at his time. In the meantime, Edward R. Hardy, Jr. says that Augustine employed the best biblical and historical scholarship available to him and engaged in historical criticism. Through this study, we find that Augustine employed the best historical scholarship, even though he did not write historical books. Augustine was not so much a historian like Toynbee as a philosopher of history like Hegel.
In the view of Simo Knuuttila, Augustine's psychological theory of time was not original, because Aristotle had already suggested that time has some kind of existence in the soul. On the contrary, in accordance with John M. Quinn, O.S.A., no one has yet pinpointed the precise source or sources of Augustine's psychological conception. In this research, we find that Augustine's theory of time was very creative, though it is synthetical on the basis of his predecessors. Meanwhile, Quinn argued that Augustine's view of time was not a prototype of Immanuel Kant's theory of time, for whatever the surface similarities, the two accounts essentially diverge. According to Quinn, unlike Augustine's basically realist notion, a transcendentally ideal time is tantamount to subjective idealism. Through this study, we find that Augustine's theory of time was many similarities to Kant's view of time in both subjective and objective aspects.
In Augustine's understanding of history, according to some scholars, there were two Augustines. J. N. Figgis said, "In Augustine there were struggling two men, like Esau and Jacob in the womb of Rebecca. There was Augustine ... possessed of the antique culture ... the there is the Augustine of 'Confessions' ... the biblical expositor, the mortified priest." Hardy said, following Figgis, "One predominated in his early life, the other in the priest and bishop, but both Augustines are represented in the De Civitate" On the contrary, William A. Christian said, "At this point some may say there are two Augustines. There is Augustine the Neoplatonist, and there is Augustine the Christian dogmatist. The former could have easily dispensed with the notion that the world had a 'beginning.' The latter, in retaining it, bowed blindly to the authority of the Scriptures." According to Christian, this interpretation would miss the point and distort the facts. In Augustine's thought about the creation and history of the world there was only one Augustine, as Christian pointed out.
In eschatology, Augustine received the millenarianist view at the beginning. However, in The City of God, Augustine said, "while the devil is bound, the saints reign with Christ during the same thousand years, understood in the same way, that is, of the time of His first coming." With regard to the doctrine of purgatory, according to Turmel, Augustine did not assert the existence of purgatory. Only at the end of his life, Augustine was merely on the verge of conceding its existence. On the contrary, Eugéne Portalié said that the existence of purgatory was absolutely certain in Augustine's writings. In fact. Augustine accepted the doctrine of purgatory in The City of God, saying, "if it be said that in the interval of time between the death of this body and that last day of judgment and retribution which shall follow the resurrection, the bodies of the dead shall be exposed to a fire ... this I do not contradict, because possibly it is true."
