Tea was loved by Chinese as it grew naturally and was cultivated in China. Tea was the life and tool to crave 'Tao(Taoistic philosophy)' for Chinese men of letters and monks. Thanks to the prevalence of the culture of drinking tea in Dang-Song dynasty, tea gained fame in the meaning of intermediate which was the expression of 'tranquility' and could lead to 'Zen'.
According to the first chinese '茶經(Scripture of Tea)' written by Yuk-Woo, Chinese drank tea from Shin-Nong dynasty. In the basis of this document, tea appeared more than 2,700 year ago in China. Tea became an important matter for the life of Chinese as it was spread for beverage which was introduced as a medicine at first. And then tea became the intermediate for craving 'Tao' as it spread to men of letters and religion.
The question about the advent of tea or the beginning of the culture of drinking tea is not yet being solved, and it is still a subject for further study. That's because the existence of the letter 'tea' are not certain in documents. There are a plenty of records for the name of tea before Dang dynasty. For example, there are many words or dialects such as '가(catalpa)', '고도(bitter lactuca dendata)', '도천(lactuca dendata disorder), '명도(tea bud of lactuca dendata)', '도(lactuca dendata)', '천(disorder)', '茗(tea bud)', etc. These words arranged for '茶(tea)' around 8th century AD according to the unification of Dang dynasty and advent of books on tea like '茶經(Scripture of Tea)'. Tea was used for medicine in 'three countries(Oui, Chock, Oh) era', then for favorite beverage for high ranking men of letters, and for things needed in the sacrificial service in 'Southern and Northern dynasties era'. Tea functioned as things needed in wedding and as aids for ascetic exercises in Zen Buddhism in Dang dynasty, and then it played a role as things for national policy in Song dynasty. In this paper, the establishment of culture of drinking tea and the process of arrangement for the names of tea in China were considered first of all.
Also the contents of poems for tea were inspected after the advent of the first poem for tea. Then it was considered that the contents from the beginning of the first poem for tea, '천부(compulsory labor for picking tea leaves)' written by Doo-Yuk in West Jin period, to 4 poems for tea before the publication of '茶經(Scripture of Tea)' and other poems for tea in Dang-Song dynasty. The subject of contents were mainly considered, that's why the division of times are not important in this paper. Thanks to this way of approach, daily life of men of letters and the titles of poems for tea such as 'Serving tea', 'Tasting tea', and 'Making tea' could be found in poems. these poems contained noble personality and human nature craving 'Tao'.
In the next chapter, the relation between tea and Buddhism was looked around. With the advent of 'Poems for Zen', how Buddhistic institution influenced tea was considered. Tea made its dimension broad having a relation with Buddhism(Zen) flourished in Dang dynasty. Throuhg this relation, tea which was simple beverage for daily life was changed to company for religious practice. That's because tea was perfect matter against 'disturbance' and 'mundane affairs' which were taboo in Buddhism. This taboo was necessary for the quiet life or meditation for men of letters. Tea was a religious tool to lead the state of 'Zen'. It was also the matter which could raise noble personality and could remove a sense of alienation for men of letters.
"Tea is like mysterious spiritual being which makes people get inspiration, which removes the soul of human being, and which improves one's wisdom." wrote Su Shi. According to views of Su Shi or other men of letters, tea is very special being which is close to 'Tao' so it is expressed by and with 'Tao' and 'courtesy'. But the studies on poems for tea are not as much as the studies on poems for drinking so far as. Fortunately the studies on the cultural and substantial aspect of tea are a lot active. Here after the studies on poems for tea will raise the noble personality for men of letters, even will increase the value of tea.
