This is a study on the effects of ICT(Information and Communication Technology)-based elementary English education, focusing on what influences ICT skills have on ICT-based English classes; what influences ICT-based English classes have on elementary school students' attitude for English learning (interest, motives for learning, confidence, and participation); what correlations the variables of students' attitude in ICT-based English classes have with one another; what correlations elementary school students' learning patterns have with one another; what differences ICT-based classes have according to the characteristics of learners, and what influences ICT-based classes have on elementary school students' self-directed learning.
The subjects were 95, sixth-year students at the elementary school where the present researcher was working there were 52 male students and 43 female students. This study used a questionnaire concerning students' interest, motives for learning, confidence and participation to investigate the effects of ICT-based English education, a translated version of the Perceptual Learning Style Preference Questionnaire by Reid(1982) for learning patterns, Brown's(2002) questionnaire on extroversion and introversion for character types, and Gugliemino' s( 1977) SDLRS (Self -Directed Learning Readiness Scale) to measure students' attitude for self-directed learning. The statistical methods used in this study were a reliability analysis, the t-test and correlation analysis, and the F-test, where necessary.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, ICT-based classes have influences on the effects of elementary school students' learning (interest, motives for learning, positiveness and participation). This implies that ICT-based classes stimulate learners' interest and confidence in English.
Second, the correlation between the variables of the effects of ICT-based classes was proven statistically significant. Thus, it was confirmed statistically that ICT-based English classes stimulate learners' motivation for and interest in learning, and consequently, allows them to participate and have confidence in the classes.
Third, ICT skills do not have influences on ICT-based classes, because no statistically significant differences were found.
Fourth, elementary school students' learning patterns were in statistically significant correlation with one another. Although students preferred different learning patterns, the largest number of students preferred the pattern of group study, which was correlated with other learning patterns. Thus, it was proven that group study is desirable for elementary school English classes.
Fifth, both introvert and extrovert characters were in statistically significant correlation with preliminary and post effects of ICT-based classes (interest,
confidence, motives for learning, and participation). This shows that ICT-based English classes are highly effective for learners with an introvert character. On the other hand, while in a preliminary test, learners with an extrovert character were statistically higher in interest, confidence, and participation than those with an introvert character, in a post test the average performance of learners with an extrovert character was somewhat higher in general. This suggests that an extrovert character is advantageous in English learning, but when ICT-based classes are adopted, the effects of English classes are not influenced by learners' character.
Finally, ICT-based classes have influence on elementary school students' self-directed learning. Elementary school students, particularly poor performers, desire the teacher' active involvement in their learning, but after the adoption of ICT-based English classes, their attitude toward self-directed learning was reinforced.
