Rotary atomizers employ centrifugal forces to atomize liquids and are utilized in various industries such as the chemical, dyeing, food, and agricultural sectors. They are used as fuel nozzles for heat engines in a purported slinger design. Slinger nozzles are extensively employed in small gas turbines due to their simplicity, low build and maintenance costs, lightweight, and multi-fuel capacity. In the present experimental and numerical study, the internal flow of a Slinger atomizer is investigated. To examine the effect of gravitational force on the flow inside the nozzle cavity, the experiments and CFD simulations are carried out at horizontal (without gravity effect) and vertical (with gravity effect) configurations. Three nozzles with an exterior glass disk were built to observe the internal nozzle flow by using high-speed imaging technique. The spinning speed of the nozzles ranges from 2000 to 10000 rpm, while the feeding rate ranges from 0.15 to 0.60 lit/min. Several numerical simulations were conducted using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model to monitor the interface between water and air inside the nozzle. Experiments and simulations were also used to determine the mass flow rate exiting the injection holes of the nozzle. Finally, the flow within the nozzle orifices is investigated. The thickness of the rivulet and film at the exit of the nozzle orifices is measured and compared to existing analytic models. Analyzing the high-speed camera images, different types of waves on the nozzle disk are observed at horizontal and vertical configurations. The effect of various rotational speeds on the structure of these waves is explored. Moreover, both CFD simulations and experimental visualizations revealed that, contrary to current assumptions, the liquid flow distribution inside the slinger nozzle is not uniform under the effect of gravitational force (vertical setup). It was found that gravity has a considerable impact on the interior flow of the nozzle and is one of the primary causes of non-uniform flow distribution inside the slinger cavity. An arc-shaped wave (ASW) was created on the nozzle disk due to gravitational force, which significantly impacts the flow inside the atomizer. The effect of rotational speed, liquid feeding rate, and nozzle geometry on the arc-shaped wave (ASW) is investigated. It was discovered that increasing the rotational speed, decreeing the feeding rate, and manufacturing an inclined nozzle disk would decrease the thickness and size of ASW and, in general, produce a more uniform flow distribution inside the nozzle. Since the rotational speed of the nozzle is substantially high, measuring the mass flow rate of each orifice of the nozzle is not possible. Because the nozzle’s rotational speed is so fast, measuring the mass flow rate of each orifice is not impossible. To circumvent this obstacle, a circular casing with six vacant slots (60 degrees each) was built to encircle and wrap the nozzle. In other terms, the liquid flow rate exiting the nozzle was measured at six predetermined locations around the nozzle rather than at each orifice. Measurements of experiments and numerical simulations display a good agreement. Although the mass flow rates at different places around the nozzle have random and modest fluctuations when set up horizontally, gravity and ASW produce significant differences in the mass flow rate exiting each nozzle orifice. Areas with maximum and minimum flow rates are detected at vertical setup, which are related to the angle of ASW. Furthermore, the flow inside the nozzle orifices is analyzed with the aid of CFD simulations. Two distinct flow modes were observed at the nozzle’s exit: rivulet mode for low rotational speeds and film and rivulet mode for high rotational speeds. The thickness of these films and rivulets within the nozzle orifices was quantified and compared to current analytic models for horizontal and vertical configurations.
