The royal and imperial palaces of Joseon(1392-1897) and Daehan Empire(1897-1910) had a pair of large incense burners placed on both sides of the entrance to the throne hall. Of them, only two pairs are remaining today, one at the Moon Terrace of Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace and the other is from Junghwajeon Hall of Deoksugung Palace. These large incense burners were called “dragon Incense Burner(yonghyangno)” due to the dragon motif used to decorate then. According to The Diary of the Construction of Gyeongbokgung Palace(Gyeongbokgung Yeonggeon Ilgi), the dragon incense burners of Geunjeongjeon Hall were made in 1866 while, according to the records in the books of state protocols(uigwe), the dragon incense burners of Junghwajeon Hall were first made in 1902 but had to be made again three years later due to the fire that destroyed them. The burners of Geunjeongjeon Hall were made by melting a large bell produced in 1457, those of Junghwajeon Hall with molten metal. The incense burners of Junghwajeon Hall in particular are highly regarded as a source for the study of the political situation surrounding the Korean imperial court thanks to the details of records made regarding their production, materials used and the artisans who made the burners. Following the production of the incense burners for Geunjeongjeon Hall, Lord Heungseon Daewongun(1820-1898), chief of the government of Joseon at the time, asked the Joseon envoys sent to the imperial court of Qing about the size and structure of the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of Qing. The information he obtained from the envoys included the fact that there were a pair of large incense burners placed at the front of the Hall of Supreme Harmony(Taihedian), the imperial throne hall of the Forbidden City, while there were none at Junghwajeon Hall. It appears that it was after the report that the Korean imperial court studied the early records and drawings of the imperial palace of Qing documented by the Joseon envoys, finding that the Qing court used a pair of large incense burners for the adornment of the imperial throne hall. The incense burners at Taihedian Hall of the Forbidden City are uniquely different from those at the Joseon and Daehan palaces in their size and form. The dragon incense burners at the royal and imperial palaces of Joseon and Daehan Empire share similarities with the incense burners traditionally used by the Joseon court as shown by the illustrations contained in the books of state protocols published in the 18th and 19th centuries. The dragon incense burners at the throne halls were originally complete with the lids carved with dragon heads as shown by the uigwe illustrations produced in the Joseon and Daehan Empire periods. Of the remaining burners, those of Geunjeongjeon Hall of Gyeongbokgung Palace were lost sometime during the 1960s while those of Junghwajeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace only one lid is remaining today with the other lid lost during the first half of the 20th century when Korean was under Japanese colonial rule. When complete with their lid, these incense burners feature the form similar to those traditionally used at state rites. The dragon incense burners newly adopted for the throne hall during the reign of Emperor Gojong were intended to strengthen the royal authority during the late Joseon period.
