Fault diagnostics for motor drive systems with short-circuit failure of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) using system-level measurements
Insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) are one of the most used power devices, which are used in various systems such as trains and electric vehicles. Unexpected failures of IGBTs can lead to shut down of the system and can cause a large amount of economic loss. Thus fault diagnostics of IGBTs should be developed to predict the failure before it occurs.
Previous studies have focused on the failure detection of IGBTs; they detect the failure after it occurs. Other studies proposed fault detection methods to detect the failure before it occurs. However, they require additional circuits to detect the failure of IGBTs; it makes it difficult to implement the methods into system-level applications. Thus this dissertation studied a fault diagnostic method to predict failures of IGBTs using system-level measurements; the method that 1) can detect failure before it occurs and 2) does not require any additional sensors. To achieve these goals, this dissertation consists of three research thrusts.
The first thrust proposes component-level fault diagnostics of IGBTs subjected to latent electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage that can lead to short-circuit failure. An aging test scheme is proposed to define fault levels of IGBTs subjected to multiple ESD damage. Also, the threshold voltage of IGBTs is proposed as a health feature that can quantify ESD-induced fault levels of IGBTs. Validity of the proposed test scheme and the health feature is demonstrated using three types of discrete IGBTs (i.e., component-level) and one type of six-pack IGBT module.
Next, the second thrust develops models of motor drive systems at various fault levels with IGBTs subjected to latent ESD damage. Turn-on transient models of IGBTs and its model parameters are investigated first. Then faulty-IGBT models at each fault levels are developed by fitting models with the test results at each fault levels. Then system-level models at each fault levels are developed by substituting one of six IGBTs in motor drive systems with each faulty-IGBT models. The stator current signals from system-level models are simulated, and time-domain and frequency-domain analyses are conducted. The results show that more advanced health feature should be defined to detect the faults in motor drive systems using stator current signals.
Finally, the third thrust proposes fault diagnostics using system-level measurements for motor drive systems with faulty IGBTs. A physics-based health feature is proposed, which is based on the principle of space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). The proposed method does not require additional sensors as the method uses three-phase stator current signals that are already available for the control purpose. The validity of the proposed methods is demonstrated by results from simulation models. The results confirm that the proposed feature can detect the fault in IGBTs before the failure occurs.
