This study aimed to analyze the differences and characteristics shown in Taiwanese learners’ and Korean native speakers’ intonation of connective endings functioning as final endings by using acoustic-phonetic methods. This study focused on providing fundamental material in teaching Korean intonation, and it aimed to identify the problems in Taiwanese learners’ intonation by exploring the differences between the actualization of intonation by Korean and Taiwanese speakers.
The first chapter presented the purpose and necessity of this study, reviewed past studies related to the intonation and the roles of connective endings functioning as final endings, and introduced the content and methods of the study.
The second chapter examined the theoretical background of this study, which is Korean intonation and connective endings functioning as final endings. The concept of ‘nuclear tones’ suggested by Ho-Young, Lee(1996, 1999), and boundary tone patterns of intonational phrases’ suggested by Jun(2000) was compared, and concepts and terms related to connective endings functioning as final endings were defined.
In the third chapter, the methods and subjects of the experiment were presented. In this experiment, a recording session was conducted on twenty subjects; ten Taiwanese speakers and ten Korean native speakers. Five connective endings functioning as final endings that were useful and often used in conversational situations, ‘-거든’, ‘-고’, ‘-는데’, ‘-니까’, ‘-다고’ were selected. The voice analyzing software ‘Praat’ was used to edit and analyze the recorded voice data. In this experiment, the ending boundary tone patterns of intonational phrases, the time duration of boundary syllables, and the rate of f0 change of boundary tones were measured.
The fourth chapter dealt with the acoustical characteristics of intonation that were recognizable in Taiwanese and Korean speakers’ Korean. These characteristics were gathered by analyzing the voice data acquired by the experiment described above. Also, the difference between intonation realized by Taiwanese learners of Korean and that realized by Korean native speakers was presented, with regard to the analyzed results. According to the analysis done in this study, Taiwanese learners made the sounds ‘-고’ and ‘-는데’ similarly to native speakers with small effort, and they were able to differentiate the meanings depending on the intonation. Furthermore, it was discovered that Taiwanese learners can differentiate meanings of connective endings by controlling the time duration of boundary syllables, just as Korean native speakers can. However, in general, Taiwanese learners tend to pronounce boundary syllables more briefly than native speakers do. The Taiwanese learners’ rate of f0 change of boundary tones was shown to be different from that of Korean speakers, and this difference was statistically significant. For the L% group, Taiwanese learners showed more drastic drop rates compared to Korean native speakers; for the H% group, they showed a lower rise compared to Korean native speakers. The analyzed results imply that Taiwanese learners sometimes struggle with pronouncing intonations differently for different meanings and that even Taiwanese learners who are fluent in Korean are unable to actualize intonations as appropriately as native speakers.
Chapter five summarized the content of this study and discussed the limitations and significance of this study.
All in all, this study analyzed intonations shown in Taiwanese learners through acoustic-phonetic methods and examined the ways that intonation was realized by Taiwanese learners. Also, Taiwanese learners who are studying Korean need to get educated on precise intonation in order to acquire sound communication skills. Therefore, it is important to analyze the Taiwanese speakers’ intonations of connective endings functioning as final endings, and to understand the problem in their pronunciation. This study may help provide fundamental material to educate Taiwanese learners on Korean intonations, and may also help develop content related to intonation education.
