As an artist Melville had lots of conflicts in living his period. In mid-19th century most Americans could not escape from the influence of the "Manifest Destiny" ideology which was used for rationalizing their nation's expansionism strategy.
Melville started his career as a writer after experiencing lots of tough situations. As we recognize in the preface of his first novel, Typee, Melville put emphasis on realizing his truth-seeking mission. That is to say, he tried to deliver the true reality of his period and society without being confined by the prevalent social standards. For this purpose, Melville pursued the most suitable artistic form for his novels.
This paper focuses on Melville's artistic technique especially in his two important short stories, "Bartleby, the Scrivener" and "Benito Cereno". As a forerunner of reception aesthetics theorist, Melville emphasized the important role of readers in recognizing the implied author's message. There are two kinds of readers, "deep-diver" and "superficial skimmer of pages" in Melville's viewpoint. For eagle-eyed readers Melville invented somewhat tricky networks of structure in his novel. His typical ragged art form offers a case in point. In Melville's novels there exists an aesthetic distance between the implied author and the narrator. Usually Melville's texts are divided into the narrator-artist's balanced form and the implied author's ragged art form that consists of the narrator's main text and the sequels. For the complete understanding of his novel, the readers have to penetrate the characteristics of the reciprocal reflectivity between the main text and the other narrative such as sequels and prefaces.
In the case of "Bartleby" we could recognize the narrator-lawyer's viewpoint of his story by examining the rumors of Bartleby in the sequel. Similarly in "Benito Cereno" readers must penetrate the correlation between the narrator Delano's main text and the court testimony of the sequel. In the process of finding out the true message of Melville's multi-layered and open-ended novels, the readers can escape from the influence of the dominant ideology, not to mention grasping the author's true message.
