This thesis explores the relationships and social status of artists depicted in the portrait paintings of the eighteenth-century English artist Thomas Gainsborough. Gainsborough, acclaimed as a leading portrait artist of his time, received praise for his free style, delicate brushwork, and precise depictions of modern attire. Alongside his reputation as a painter, his affinity for the performing arts is well-documented in art history. Possessing numerous musical instruments and enjoying musical performances, Gainsborough formed special connections with performers, capturing their portraits. However, existing research on such works has tended to focus on the sitters and techniques, neglecting the close relationship between these paintings and the societal changes in art, music, theatre, and dance during that period. Accordingly, this study aims to analyse the various portraits Gainsborough left behind, considering them within the context of the societal transformations taking place in eighteenth-century England.
The establishment of constitutional monarchy through the Glorious Revolution of the preceding century and the economic development triggered by the Industrial Revolution positioned England at the forefront of eighteenth-century Europe. The progress in socio-economic conditions led to the accumulation of wealth, the rise of the middle class as a new consumer group, and increased interest in culture and the arts. The prevailing notion of politeness, emphasising ethical conduct and cultured refinement, became central, highlighting the importance of virtue and sophistication fostered through rationality and harmony in conversation, education, and taste.
The concepts of politeness and taste were closely tied to culture and significantly influenced the hierarchical formation between the artistic producing class and the consuming class. The cultural and economic growth prompted a flourishing of arts in major cities, attracting artists from both within and outside England. The theatre, a long-standing and highly favoured form of entertainment, saw further prosperity due to government legislation and improvements in theatre management systems. The theatre industry created actors who enjoyed wealth and fame comparable to today’s celebrities. The establishment of the Royal Academy of Arts and public exhibitions provided painters with opportunities to pursue their dreams, leading many to migrate to London. Musicians from the continent, actively supported by German-born royal family, joined, as did dancers associated with operas and plays. The pursuit of intellectual exchange, emphasised by politeness, contributed to the prosperity of clubs, associations, pleasure gardens, and, ultimately, theatres and professional concert halls. The expansion of public spaces offered vast possibilities for artists but also signalled the necessity for intense competition and securing prestige.
Seeking new markets, Gainsborough travelled to various cities, solidifying his position as a painter. He strategically chose locations, such as his well-utilised studio and the annual exhibition venue at the Royal Academy of Arts, considering regional advantages. The concert halls of the musicians in his portraits also served as excellent spaces to showcase talents to potential clients. With a passion for music and a fondness for theatrical decor, Gainsborough found himself deeply involved in the public and private lives of both native and foreign performers. The relationships between the commissioners, the artist, and the portrayed individuals in his works were as complex and nuanced as the societal currents of the time. Gainsborough differentiated the types of instruments, possession, and posture in each musician’s portrait, not only based on their proficiency and skill but also considering factors such as gender, the purpose of the commission, and the exhibition’s goals. In the case of portraits of actors or dancers, he dedicated meticulous attention to facial expression, costumes, postures, and the composition and portrayal of colours.
While there has been a considerable accumulation of studies on Gainsborough’s portraits in Anglophone academia, integrating his active involvement in other artistic genres and comprehensively addressing works featuring artists from different disciplines and the cultural context has proven challenging. An interdisciplinary approach, crucial for exploring paintings with complex elements in terms of economics, class, and the art domain, has been overlooked. Therefore, this study aims to provide a distinctive contribution by focusing on the dense proximity between individuals and disciplines, emphasising the reading of portraits of performers. To achieve this, the thesis initially delves into the socio-cultural context of eighteenth-century England, examining the environment artists faced amid the relentless competition. Furthermore, it explores the history and context of music, theatre, and dance, not just in the realm of visual art but also in the stages of production, visual devices, and audience reactions. Thus, this paper seeks to elucidate the dynamics of the positions and relationships among the artists, offering a comprehensive understanding of the multidimensional landscape in which portraiture unfolded—a terrain where all involved, amidst rivalry and partnership, sought to visualise their respective statuses and desires.
