This study examines the characteristics of metacognitive elements of gifted students in independent research and the expression of metacognitive by stage of independent research. Through independent research, gifted class students studied a single gifted class case to examine the metacognitive factors used to solve research problems in students' communication. Various educational materials and activity materials were prepared to enhance students' understanding of independent research, which is unfamiliar to them, and to help them with their activities. This study found metacognition that is activated by students in gifted classes taking procedures at each stage to solve research problems closely related to real life in the communication of feedback within or between participating teams. After that, the purpose was to analyze the characteristics and expression patterns of metacognition expressed at each independent research stage.
According to the above purpose, the research problem was set as follows.
First, what are the characteristics of metacognition seen in the independent research procedure of gifted class students?
Second, what is the expression pattern of each metacognitive element?
According to the research problem, this study developed independent research data for gifted class students and applied them to regular gifted class classes to analyze the characteristics of students' metacognition found in the independent research process. The purpose of this study is to examine the possibility of independent research as a form of class that helps express metacognition and to examine the characteristics of metacognition in each procedure of independent research.
The results of the study are as follows.
The characteristics of metacognition seen in the independent research procedure of gifted class students are as follows.
First, the most common metacognitive factor in independent research is the induction activity in the performance area. Due to its nature, independent research includes a lot of the process of establishing and implementing 'plan'. Accordingly, induction activities, which include the meaning of establishing and implementing 'plan', occurred most frequently among metacognitive factors.
Second, the second most frequently observed metacognitive element after induction activities is monitoring activities. Judo activities inevitably lead to surveillance activities. In addition, cognitive activities checked by surveillance activities were fed back to students' research, leading to new induction activities.
Third, research and evaluation activities in the performance area were more active in the middle and second half of the independent research procedure. Investigation activities were difficult to observe at the beginning of the study, but as research continued, students developed their ability to view the study. In addition, since this survey activity includes reflection on the experiment, it naturally activated the evaluation activity.
Fourth, most of the students' evaluation activities for their own research were positive positively. Students became attached to their research through research conducted with relatively long breathing. Based on this attachment, students sought new possibilities for transfer and promised the next study, and recognized the value that their research would be helpful to others.
Fifth, there is a difference between the metacognitive elements that occur between teams and the metacognitive elements that occur within the team. In the case of team feedback, students generally spoke of the guiding activities and monitoring activities of the performance area, and the elements of the knowledge area. In the team, guidance and monitoring activities in the performance area were mainly observed before knowledge was accumulated at the beginning of the study, but it was confirmed that research and evaluation activities were activated as knowledge was accumulated.
The expression patterns of each metacognitive element are as follows.
The expression patterns of elements in the metacognitive intellectual domain are as follows.
First, K1 is mainly uttered in the form of synthesizing and reconstructing knowledge that one already knew or making conclusions through one's own guess.
Second, K2 was mainly ignited when it felt limited to research. It was expressed as 'I think it will be difficult,' 'Is it possible?' and so on.
Third, K3 was mostly classified as an induction activity because it was accompanied by induction activities in the performance area. Other than that, there was no direct action, so it was uttered as if it were talking to itself.
The expression patterns of elements in the performance area of metacognition are as follows.
First, induction activities (PG1, PG2) are the most frequently observed activities in independent studies. In the case of PG1 activities, it appeared in languages such as 'Let's do it' and 'Why don't you do it?' In the case of PG2, it appeared as expressions such as "Let's do it instead" within the team, and in the feedback between teams, it appeared as euphemisms such as "How about doing it?" and "It's better to do it."
Second, PM1 of monitoring activities (PM1, PM2, and PM3) increased its speech as related knowledge increased as research continued. PM2 was found in students' conversations when expressing their guesses about the research content. These activities later played a role in finding new directions for research and injecting ideas into research progress. After the occurrence of PM3, if a problem is found, it returns to induction activity, but sometimes it does not return to induction activity.
Third, survey activities (PC) were not observed until the mid-to-late part of the study. Survey activities have been observed a lot as a form of reflection, and they give you an opportunity to reflect on the achievements obtained in the experimental process.
The expression patterns of the elements of the affective domain of metacognition are as follows.
First, the defining factor of metacognition is a factor that affects continuing independent research and achieving research performance goals. E1's attitude contributed to solving the problem by promoting the expression of other metacognitive elements in students, and E2's attitude reduced the appearance of other metacognitive elements, making it difficult to achieve research goals.
Second, E1 was expressed as an expression of emotion (encouragement and praise) in the early stages of the study, but changed to an expression of the research content itself in the middle and late stages of the study. On the other hand, in the case of E2, it was expressed as an expression of negative emotions throughout the research process.
This study has the following implications.
First, it is necessary to formalize the teaching and learning method of independent research and provide opportunities for application to various gifted education institutions.
Second, when conducting independent research as a team, the team should be formed in consideration of students' tendencies so that the affective elements of metacognition can be positively expressed.
Third, it is necessary to provide gifted classes with high participation and long-lasting gifted classes to gifted students in gifted classes should be provided.
Fourth, at the beginning of independent research, teachers should be able to provide sufficient knowledge, and education for gifted teachers should be strengthened.
