It is generally known that Buddha images were first made in Gandhara and Mathura, India hundreds of years after Shakyamuni Buddha`s Nirvana, i.e. between the end of the 1st century and the early 2nd century CE. However, in the pre∼modern period, people in East Asia accepted without doubt the contents of the Buddhist Sutras which state that King Udayana of Kaushambi in present∼ day India had an image of Shakyamuni Buddha made of sandalwood during his lifetime. This paper attempts to examine the characteristics of olden∼day people`s beliefs about Buddha images and how they regarded Buddha images by looking into the Record of the Introduction of Sandalwood Auspicious Buddha Image, which is a material about the history of the first Buddha image. The Record of the Introduction of the Sandalwood Auspicious Buddha Image is a kind of Buddhist monument set up at Jiufengsi Temple in Beijing by the monk Shaoqian in 1597 during the Ming Dynasty. The monumental stone contained a Buddha image (drawing) that was a copy of the auspicious Buddha image (sculpture) which used to be kept at the temple along with inscriptions explaining the origin and the history of that Buddha image. The monumental stone has disappeared, but a photo remains of a rubbed copy of it which used to be kept at Yujeomsa Temple in Geumgangsan Mountain, Korea in the early 20th century. According to this material, the first Buddha image made by King Udayana was relocated from one place to another throughout India, Central Asia and China from the 1,280th year after Shakyamuni Buddha`s Nirvana until 1597, and finally ended up at Jiufengsi Temple in Beijing. The said introduction systematically explains how the first Buddha image was relocated from one place to another. Particularly, the detailed contents of the record concerning the Song Dynasty and thereafter are valuable as a historic material. It is noteworthy that the Buddha image inscribed on the monumental stone as a copy of the original one is quite similar in appearance to the Sandalwood Auspicious Shakyamuni Buddha Image made in 985 during the Northern Song Dynasty, which is now in Seiryoji Temple in Japan and is said to be a typical Udayana∼style standing Buddha Image. This shows that these types of standing Buddha images were regarded by the Chinese as the real image of Shakyamuni Buddha for a long period of time. Most of the surviving auspicious Shakyamuni Buddha images in China were made during the Yuan Dynasty or thereafter and are closely associated with Lamanism of Tibet. People`s belief in auspicious Shakyamuni Buddha images was first expressed in sandalwood and then in gilt bronze. I am planning to shed light on records and materials concerning auspicious Shakyamuni Buddha images of the late Goryeo and Joseon periods in another thesis.
