Airborne particulate matter present in the air within domestic industrial settings serves as a causative factor for respiratory conditions such as pneumoconiosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Among workplaces with hazardous conditions, those involved in activities generating airborne particulate matter constitute a significant proportion, accounting for as much as 41.5% of all workplaces.
Small-scale businesses, comprising over 97% of domestic workplaces with fewer than 50 permanent employees, prioritize the use of personal protective equipment, with the adoption of respiratory masks being the most prevalent among the considered risk mitigation measures.
To protect workers from hazardous factors, a high level of seal integrity is essential for respiratory masks. If a secure seal is not maintained and the fit deteriorates, harmful substances can easily penetrate the mask's interior through leakage points, compromising the protection of workers. The most representative method to enhance the sealing performance of respiratory masks is through systematic mask-wearing education.
This study aimed to investigate the interactive effects between education and job characteristics by measuring fit factors of respiratory masks before and after mask-wearing education, based on different work postures. The fit factor was measuredamong 48 workers from workplaces where the frequency of wearing particulate-filtering masks, specifically N95 respirators, was high.
For this experiment, 3M respiratory masks were utilized, and fit factor
measurements were conducted using TSI Respirator Fit Tester (Pro+ 8048) for quantitative fit testing. The experiment followed the protocols outlined in the Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT) method specified by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Four different work postures (head side-to-side, head up-and-down, speaking, and bending at the waist) were adopted for the experiment.
The obtained experimental results are as follows:
1. The fit factor before respiratory mask-wearing education was below the quantitative fit testing criterion of 100. However, after the education, the fit factor increased to 127.
2. Regardless of the education, fit factors in the head side-to-side, head up-and-down, and speaking work postures exceeded the quantitative fit testing criterion of 100. However, the fit factor during the bending at the waist posture appeared relatively low.
3. For all four work postures, the fit factors were below the quantitative fit testing criterion of 100 before mask-wearing education. However, after the education, fit factors for all postures exceeded 100. Especially noteworthy is that the fit factor for the bending at the waist posture showed a significantly higher value after the education.
Through these results, it was observed that there were significant differences in fit factors among different work postures (especially between bending at the waist and other postures) before education. However, after the education, the differences in fit factors among work postures became non-significant. Therefore, education on respiratory mask-wearing is essential, and systematic training should be implemented.
Through this study, it is possible to identify tasks where education is crucial depending on the work posture, allowing for targeted training on specific work postures. This can lead to improvements such as designing tasks and allocating workers based on whether education has been conducted or not, effectively utilizing training time. Consequently, there can be benefits in the industrial field.
