Optimizing workflow execution through simulation sharing scheme
Recently, a new theoretical and methodological approach for computational science is becoming more and more popular for analyzing and solving scientific problems in various scientific disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials science, life science, medical and applied research. Computational science is a field of study concerned with constructing mathematical models and quantitative analysis techniques and using large computing resources to solve the problems which are difficult to approach in a physical experimentally. Therefore, the form of a computer simulation-based knowledge transfer has been active in the world.
The goal is to gain understanding and promote problem-solving skills, mainly through the analysis of mathematical models and computer simulations implemented on cyberinfrastructure. The field is distinct from computer science. It is also different from theory and experiment which are the traditional forms of science and engineering. Yet, the computational science approach is now independent of its own, and it cannot be avoided in almost every scientific field.
Typically, a simulation is performed with various models and sets of input parameters. It requires massive amounts of calculations and is often executed on supercomputers or distributed computing platforms. However, the simulations for education have different characteristics from general research simulations. The educational simulations have a relatively simple process and can be run by many users (students) at the same time. When simulations are running, the knowledge for initial parameters and optimal candidate models are provided by simulation experts (Professor, TA) in case of educational simulations. Thus, students can perform only changes to the values of parameters to look for the desired results repeatedly. Due to this characteristic, there are many duplicated simulation jobs in class or homework.
However, the previous studies have been focused on parallel distributed simulation techniques or a selection strategy of initial models and parameters to minimize the number of iterations through an algorithm for dedicated domain without considering the characteristics of educational environment. Although these studies provide big help in performing the overall simulation-based scientific research, the issues of support for the novice users and large number of simultaneous users are remaining.
Therefore, we propose a simulation sharing scheme to optimize workflow execution that is a new methodology to take advantages of the above-mentioned previous studies while considering the characteristics of simulation-based education environment.
The proposed scheme guides you to create an efficient workflow for the given problem solving process. It also guides to select initial parameters which lead to outstanding performance. Most of all, you can prevent the repetition of the same simulation by our method which is performed with meaningful information extracted from simulation provenance data.
To verify the proposed method, we design and implement a platform which has applied our simulation sharing scheme to optimize workflow execution with the use of a large computing resource. We compare the typical simulation-based education support system and our proposed scheme for performance. We show that our proposed scheme reduces the number of simulation executions by about 10%~40% as the result of experiment. In this paper, we prove the superiority of the proposed simulation sharing scheme.
