Background: Reading disorder (RD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in school age children. Attention-deficit/hyperactive-impulsive disorder (ADHD) is the most common comorbid condition associated with RD. Purpose: This study aims to compare ADHD symptoms of children who were at risk of RD and children without risk of RD in Grade 1. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Grade 1 students aged 6 - 8 years from eight schools in Pathumthani Province, Thailand. Demographic data were collected by self-report questionnaire from parents. The Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale (SNAP-IV), parent and teacher versions were used to evaluate ADHD symptoms, whereas reading assessment was used to identify children with reading difficulty. Results: Reading assessment classified 95 (13.5%) from 703 students as children at risk of RD. The mean SNAP-IV scores of children at risk of RD were significantly higher than those of children with typical reading in both inattentive and hyperactive presentations. The numbers of students with ADHD symptoms in the at-risk groups were significantly higher than those with normal reading skills. The odds ratio of having significant ADHD symptoms in children at risk of RD from teacher reports were 7.92, 3.86, and 5.47 for inattentive, hyperactive and combined presentations, respectively. Conclusion: Grade 1 students with reading difficulty had significantly higher prevalence of ADHD symptoms, predominantly inattentive presentation, compared with normal readers.
