Case indicates the function of a noun phrase or the relationship of a noun phrase to a verb or other noun phrases in the sentence. Jespersen (1949: 105) defines Case as "one of the varied forms of a substantive, adjective, or pronoun, which express the varied relations in which it may stand to some other sentence." Recently Case plays a significant role in Generative Grammar.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the configurations in which English structural Case is assigned / checked in the course of the development of Generative Grammar from the Government-Binding Theory to the Minimalist Program. This study discusses various proposals concerning Case assignment / checking in terms of conceptual simplicity and empirical adequacy.
Case theory including Case Filter and Case assignment condition is one of the modules of the Government and Binding Theory. A noun phrase in a Case-less position has to move to a Case position in order to avoid the Case Filter, and Case is a driving force for NP movements.
Various analyses have been proposed concerning structural Case assignment / checking in the Minimalist Program, and this thesis discusses them into four headings: AGR-based, feature-checking-based, head complementiser-based, and T-based checking.
First, AGR-based Case assignment involves checking the relevant Case feature in the SPEC-head agreement relation. A head bearing Case feature checks the relevant feature of NP to the specifier position of the head by SPEC-head agreement. This proposal is based on Pollock's (1989) Split Infl Hypothesis and VP-Internal Subject Hypothesis. AGR-based analysis makes it possible to give a uniform characterization of structural Case checking including nominative, accusative, and ECM's accusative Case in the relation of SPEC-head agreement with functional AgrS and AgrO. With this analysis, the assignment of all the structural Case is explained in a symmetrical way.
Second, Chomsky (1999, 2000, 2001) changes functional AGR into T and analyses structural Case by agreement of features. Feature-checking-based Case assignment involves an agreement relation between an active probe and an active goal, and that probe and goal are only active if they carry one or more uninterpretable 𝛗 -features or Case features. Some features enter the derivation already valued, whereas others such as Case features are initially unvalued and are assigned values in the course of the derivation through operations like Feature-Copying and Feature-Deletion. An unvalued Case feature on a goal is valued as nominative by probe carrying finite tense if probe and goal match in 𝛗 -features. Accusative Case is assigned by a transitive light verb carrying 𝛗 -features. And a null 𝛗 -complete determiner assigns genitive Case to a goal.
Third, Radford (2004) suggests head complementiser-based Case Assignment that assigns structural Case by c-commending head of appropriate kind. Transitive head assigns accusative Case to a noun or pronoun expression which it c-commands. An intransitive finite complementiser and a null intransitive non-finite complementiser assigns respectively nominative and null Case to nominals which it c-commands. That is, noun or pronoun expression is Case-marked by the closest functional head above them, namely C.
Forth, Pesetsky and Torrego (2001, 2004) propose T-based checking resulting from the interaction between T motivated movement in the C system and nominative Case on the subject. All structural Cases are instances of uT on D. uT on a complement of V enter into an Agree relation with an instance of T. Tense based analysis suggests a unification of tense theory and Case theory with recent work in the nature of syntactic categories. Pesetsky and Torrego's tense-based analysis is most persuasive and progressive among various analyses as the tool of the culmination of structural Case checking.
