This paper focuses on actor training and explores how viewpoint training can effectively enhance the spatial and temporal dimensions of an actor's performance. Stage actors, due to their inherent characteristics, need to quickly perceive changes in space and time on stage, making such specialized training essential.
In terms of temporality, actors can convey the passage of time and character evolution through varying walking speeds or stage movements. In spatial terms, they can represent spatial changes and scene transitions through different body postures and movement patterns on stage. In this context, viewpoint training, as a method of acting training, emphasizes the importance of space and time.
Viewpoint training originated from the Six Viewpoints, a modern dance choreography technique invented by American choreographer Mary Overlie in the 1970s. Later, Tina Landau and Anne Bogart further developed this method, adding new viewpoints to make it more suitable for theatrical creation. This approach, grounded in exploring the relationship between time and space, develops an actor's movements through nine basic physical elements and five auditory viewpoints, thereby fostering a sense of spatiality and temporality. Viewpoint training also focuses on physical training, rejects realism, and advocates for improvisation. Different from traditional realistic theater, viewpoint training presents the relationship between time and space in a novel way, moving beyond fixed conceptions and rendering the actor's performance more natural and vivid. To achieve the desired spatiality and temporality in actors, viewpoint training introduces core components such as time, space, shape, gesture, speed, and slowness. These aspects, when honed and applied, assist actors in enhancing the expression of their internal and external states through space and time.
Generally, an actor's internal emotions are externalized in their performance. However, the external characteristics of performance behaviors can also inversely influence the actor's emotions. Viewpoint training is a system that identifies the external characteristics of performance behaviors from an external perspective (Viewpoint), then internalizes these characteristics through body and voice training, developing the actor's bodily sensitivity. Moreover, viewpoint training helps actors discover their physical limits and potential, enhancing their performance abilities.
Essentially, viewpoint training strengthens an actor's physical capabilities and assists them in comprehending spatiality and temporality. This method has been extensively used in theatrical production, making the study of viewpoints a valuable reference for actor training. Based on practical experience, this research elaborates on the core theories of viewpoints and delves into their application in actor training. It emphasizes the importance of spatiality and temporality for actors, offering opportunities for their development.
Additionally, the research analyzes the strengths and areas for improvement of viewpoint training in spatiality and temporality, providing practical suggestions to help readers understand the application value of viewpoints more appropriately.
Specifically, this study analyzes the spatiotemporal elements of viewpoints, integrates theoretical analyses of the nine elements previously proposed, and, based on the researcher's own experiences in actual training, suggests various training models suitable for these nine elements, along with an analysis of these models' effectiveness.
