The development and foreign relations of old Joseon
This study has examined the development of Old Joseon in the context of its foreign relations manifested over the course of its existence. Keeping in mind the following issues, the study aimed to gain an understanding of Old Joseon’s foreign relations.
First, the issue of establishing the basic concepts of Old Joseon and the nature of historical records exists. Recently in Chinese academia, Old Joseon has been recognized as KijaJoseon and WimanJoseon, based on the view that Old Joseon is part of the regional power of Zhongyuan Dynasty. This perspective holds that the conflict between Han(漢) and WimanJoseon is also that of one between Han. Meanwhile, in Korean academia, KijaJoseon is not recognized whereas the “Joseon” of the time is not clearly defined. Existing historical works have been largely influenced by the KijaJoseon theory; foreign relations have also been understood as tribute(‘朝’), subjugation(‘內屬’), and outer subject relations(‘外臣’) Such records with Sinocentric expressions must be clarified through strict source criticism for a sound investigation of Old Joseon’s identity and foreign relations.
Based on relevant literature, one finds that Old Joseon was founded around the 20th century BC or the 15th century BC at the latest. It is necessary to compare the era of Old Joseon mentioned in the literature with that of archaeological sources. Based on the Samgukyusa (三國遺事) in which the term “Old Joseon” first appeared, Old Joseon is referred to as WanggeomJoseon (王儉朝鮮) founded by DangunWanggeom(壇君王儉) which precedes WimanJoseon. However, due to the influence of the KijaJoseon theory which appeared after the collapse of WimanJoseon, a recognition of identifying KijaJoseon as Later Joseon(後朝鮮) was formed. Thus, the Joseon prior to WimanJoseon(衛滿朝鮮) only refers to WanggeomJoseon(王儉朝鮮), and it is necessary to subdivide the development of WanggeomJoseon according to chronological changes through archaeological and literature materials.
Second, there is the issue of setting the time and space of Old Joseon. In Korean academia, there is a recent trend which views the Bronze Dagger Culture as the establishment culture of Old Joseon. The Liaoxi area’s Sibideiyeongza(十二臺營子) Culture is particularly gaining attention. Therefore, the culture and Liaodong Region taking place before the advent of Lute-shaped Daggers tend to be less discussed. There may be differences in perspectives regarding the basis of material culture and which cultural stage corresponds to Old Joseon. If Old Joseon is the first nation of the Han people, its influence on the Korean Peninsula must be taken into consideration. If so, the archeological culture of the Liaodong region, such as Dolmens which exerted influence on the Korean Peninsula from the early stages, warrants attention.
In particular, tombs are of importance among the material culture of Old Joseon. This is because tombs, unlike other relics, are conservative in nature and clearly shows the features of a Group Establishing. Thus, this study recognized the Liaodong region—the origin of Dolmens and Stone-lined tombs—as the early center of Old Joseon. Dolmens, which are typical graves of Old Joseon, were in use for a long time. Dolmens were already built in the Liaodong Region in the 15th century BC. It is possible that the first dolmen may have been built as early as in the 20th century BC. According to an examination of literature materials from 4th century BC, it is probable that Old Joseon’s center was located in the Liaodong region. Furthermore, due to the invasion of Yan(燕) Qinkai(秦開) in late 3rd century BC, Old Joseon moved to the Pyungyang region. This research, therefore, studied the foreign relations of Old Joseon within this context in which Old Joseon’s center moved from the Liaodong region to the Pyungyang region.
Third, there is the issue of Old Joseon’s development. Foreign relations are formed based on multilateral relationsh. Thus, it is possible to estimate how Old Joseon responded to its surroundings during its development by analyzing articles on foreign relations of different periods. Moreover, for the developmental phases of the inner Old Joseon, domestic literature is used as a reference. In other words, the article on Old Joseon’s capital transfer may imply the expansion and decline of Old Joseon. In addition, the royal title of Old Joseon seems to have changed in the seguence of Dangun, Geom, and King, which allows an estimation of how Old Joseon progressed.
Based on such recognition, the foreign relations of Old Joseon can be traced back to 2000 BC in the Liaodong region. This period is acknowledged as a theocratic society, an elementary hierarchical society symbolized by “Dangun.” The major tombs of this period are Dolmens, Catacombs, and Stone Mound Tombs. The type differs but these three tombs share common features such as cremation custom or excavated relics. Furthermore, the Liabei region actively interacted with the Godaesan Culture, while the Lianan and Shandong regions interacted with each other. Such culture underwent a major change in the late 2000s BC. In other words, whereas table-type dolmens appeared in the earlier period, capstone type dolmens appeared later on, and catacombs were built outside caves as stone-lined tombs. This culture then spread to the Korean Peninsula and the Jilin region. The stratification process of the late period of Machengzi culture and the 3rd period of Ssangtaja Culture is observable. Moreover, the Gaotaishan Culture of Lower Liao-ho River basin actively interacted with Xiajiadian-xiaceng Culture of Liaoxi Area, and later on influenced the establishment of Xiajiadian Culture. The Liabei and Lianan regions of 10th century BC were then grouped as a highly homeogenous culture involving Misongni-type pottery and Lute-shaped Daggers, forming the Shuangfang culture. During this period, there were Sibideiyeongza Culture and Top-type Pottery Culture in the Dalinghe(大凌河) area. These three cultures have regional differences but belong to the same Lute-shaped Daggers culture area, broadly speaking.
Old Joseon in the middle of 7th century BC is recorded to have had fur trade with Qi(齊) in the Shandong region. According to the literature records and relics from the Shandong region, Bal-Joseon seemed to have traded with Qi as part of the Shuangfang culture of Liaodong region. During this period of Old Joseon, the Liaodong region as a whole became a single cultural region. Also, as seen in the examples of kangsang tomb and Liaoyang Aldaohezi tombs, it exhibits a developed bronze culture and a subdivided hierarchical society. The article discussing the transfer of the capital from Asadal or Jangdang-kyung seems to imply the purpose of managing a more extensive area. Additionally, the royal title of Old Joseon during this period seems to have changed from “Dangun” of the theocratic society to “Geom” which is characterized by a strong political ruler. Based on such developments, Old Joseon engaged in long-distance trade with Qi. Qi needed Joseon’s figured leather for its status as the defeated. It seems that Old Joseon obtained through Qi prestige goods such as treasure clam which raised the political authority of the ruling class.
Further progress of Old Joseon is manifested in the zhengjiawazi tomb during mid-1000 BC which belongs to the late Shuangfang culture period. From this tomb, the most plentiful excavated relics of the Liaodong region were discovered. This shows that the Old Joseon society has stepped into a more developed hierarchical society. In this period, a new material culture appears, involving Slender Bronze Daggers, clay stripes, and Pit Tombs. Based on such progress, Old Joseon seems to have confronted Yan, a force which includes Liaoxi and Liaodong, in the late 4th century BC. Old Joseon, defeated by Yan which was enjoying its golden days during the period of King Zhao(昭王), regarded Manfanhan as the boundary as recorded in Weilue(魏略). In Shiji(史記), the presence of Jinbeon, along with Joseon, is magnified in terms of the subject of war. The expansion of Yan at the time reached the western Liaodong region. It can be surmised that Shiji(史記) recorded this region as Jinbeon(眞番), while Weilue(魏略) discusses it as Manfanhan(滿潘汗). The western region of Liaodong, moreover, included Qin’s Wai Jiao(外徼), and it is home to the 100 mile area given to Wiman by King Jun(準王).
After Yan’s invasion, Old Joseon chose the Qianshan mountain range as its boundary and moved its center to the Pyungyang region. Some parts of the territory were regained temporarily during Yan’s collapse but it is soon lost to Qin’s invasion. It seems there are two reasons for Qin’s invasion of Old Joseon. Firstly, Qin invaded to conquer the maximum territory which Old Joseon reclaimed. Secondly, Qin wanted to go after the remnants’ exiles of the Joseon region. Here, Qin seems to have re-entered the Qianshan mountain range. The weapons of the Warring States period are remainders of wandering people of the time and an intense war between Old Joseon and Qin. After the fall of WimanJoseon, Han Liaodong army 18 prefectures are divided into 15 prefectures at west and 3 prefectures at east, along the Qianshan mountain range. There are 3 less prefectures compared to the Liaoxi and Liaodong of Early Qin after the fall of WimanJoseon. In this regard, this study acknowledges that the systematic installation of the Liaodong army was confined to the Qianshan mountain range. Since the war with Qin, the Bu-king of Old Joseon did not use Royal title; it seems that it formed a relationship with Qin in which the duty of paying visit is involved. However, Old Joseon maintained its official status as an independent nation and used Royal title internally while not on visits.
The Old Joseon at the end Qin once again reclaimed the region from the Qianshan mountain range to the Liao He. Here, the wandering people of Yan(燕), Qi(齊), and Zhao(趙) acted as a major variable. Eventually, the wandering people who became the center of WimanJoseon drove out the forces of King Jun, establishing WimanJoseon. A part of Liaohe River Plains Yan relics seems to have incorporated such culture of the wandering people. Through Liaodong, WimanJoseon exchanged goods with the Huns, while the asylums of Han’s wandering people were continuously accepted. This became one of the reasons for Han’s invasion of Old Joseon, and it is highly possible that these wandering people left behind Han tomb of the early Han which were discovered in the Liaodong region. Also, WimanJoseon blocked neighboring nations’ exchange with Han. This manifests that Old Joseon was in fact a dignified ancient nation with its own world view and that its outer subject relations(外臣) of Han was merely nominal. In order to deter WimanJoseon’s expansion, Han installed Chang hai counties in Liaodong but fails to hold WimanJoseon back. Then, the two nations went straight to war, in which WimanJoseon, winning at first, lost due to internal conflicts. Here, Han restores the Liaodong army installed at Qin and installed three additional prefectures in the Qianshan mountain range.
This study took notice of the role which the Liaodong region particularly played in the history of Old Joseon. The Liaodong region assumes an important position in Old Joseon’s foreign relations and history. Liaodong, geographically located in Taizihe(太子河) or the boundary of the Qianshan mountain range, can be divided into the Liabei and Lianan areas. The distinct cultures of these two areas developed by influencing one another. The Liaodong region interacted with the Liaoxi region to the west, while maintaining ties exchanging with the Shandong region through sea routes. Such influence of cultural development spread to the Jilin region and the Korean Peninsula.
The Liaodong region has long been the center of Old Joseon. Since the center of Old Joseon moved to the north-western area of Korean peninsula, the Liaodong region became the western part of Old Joseon where Chinese immigrants resided as well as a region of defense which prevented China‘s invasion. Also, the Liaodong defense line of WimanJoseon, which had boldly confronted Han, also collapsed, resulting in the seizure of Wangheom Castle(王險城) and collapse due to internal conflicts. Therefore, it can be viewed that the Liaodong region played an important role in the development, rise and fall, and foreign relations of Old Joseon.
