Neapolitan composer Leonardo Ortensio Salvatore de Leo (1694–1744), known mainly for his vocal music, particularly his contribution to the Neapolitan tradition of opera and church music, left us six works for cello with string accompaniment. Dedicated to the “Duke of Madalone,” five of them were composed between 1737–38, and the sixth most likely dates from the same period. Despite their quality, particularly in melodic inspiration and innovative lyricism in the employment of the cello as a solo instrument, Leo's six works have been unjustly neglected in the areas of performance, pedagogy, and musical analysis.
Composed at the junction of the Baroque and “Galant” eras, Leo's cello concerti help establish several new features of the Classical period. First, the cello concerti display in the fast movements a new melodic style based primarily on lyrical, expressive elements, Leo's career as a successful composer of vocal music certainly influenced his writing for the cello. Secondly, the structure of the some of the fast movements combines the ritornello principle with the tonal elements present in sonata form.
The present monograph provides a more ample look at Leo's cello concerti. To better understand these works, the first chapter discusses some of Leo's biographical details, the historical context, and antecedents. The second chapter is concerned with a detailed formal analysis of each movement of the concerti. In addition, elements of style are discussed, including the relationship between Leo's vocal music and the cello concerti; in this chapter I demonstrate that Leo's vocal writing influenced the new lyricism in the cello concerti. The third chapter discusses performance issues: tuning, bow and left hand technique, ornaments, cadenzas, performance precedents, and editions. The published editions and recordings are listed in Appendix B and C.
