Background: Many patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often complain of fatigue. To date, few studies have focused on fatigue related to IBD. The aim of the present study was to investigate the prevalence and severity of fatigue and impact on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among IBD patients. Method: Patients in remission and with mild and moderate IBD were included. Fatigue was assessed 13 items of the FACIT-F and Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI). Quality of life was measured by the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ). Corresponding healthy controls also completed 13 items of the FACIT-F, BFI and IBDQ. Lower FACIT-F and higher BFI score indicate greater levels of fatigue. Result: In total, 110 patients with IBD were eligible for analysis: 52 with Crohn`s disease (CD) and 58 with ulcerative colitis (UC). The comparison group consisted of 57 healthy controls (HC). The mean (SD) of the FACIT-F score was 32.5 (11.2), 34.4 (11.5), 44.4 (5.6) for CD, UC and HC. The mean (SD) global BFI score was 4.12 (2.4), 4.28 (2.5) and 2.12(1.2) for CD, UC and HC. Compared with HC, CD and UC was associated with greater levels of fatigue (p<0.001 for both diagnoses and both fatigue scores). In IBDQ, increased levels of fatigue was associated with a reduction of HRQOL in total score and four subdimensions in CD and UC (p<0.001). Conclusion: There is greater levels of fatigue in patients with IBD compared with healty controls. In both CD and UC, fatigue was shown to be associated with a significant reduction in HRQOL. This implies that in IBD patients physicians need to be aware of fatigue in order to better understand its impact and to improve the HRQOL.
