This study examines the experiential activities about macroscopic simple water quality evaluation using benthic macro-invertebrates in the stream and these activities can meet the goal of the environmental education. It also contains the analysis on how environmental education teachers use benthic macro-invertebrates in their classes. The target students for this research are middle school students. They participated in the experiential classes about the macroscopic simple water quality evaluation using benthic macro-invertebrates. As a result, they got to understand the fact that benthic macro-invertebrates play an important role fresh-water ecosystem's food chain and the relationship between benthic macro-invertebrates and water pollution. In addition, the students could understand that the variety of fresh-water creatures impact heavily on fresh-water ecosystem with this experiments. Therefore, such experiential studies could stimulate the awareness and knowledge about the environment, which is one of the goals in environmental education. This awareness can lead to the change in their attitudes toward the environment. After these experiential activities, the students' motivations to protect fresh-water ecosystem have been reinforced. Moreover, they have been proved to be more willing to participate in activities for keeping the fresh-water ecosystem after these activities. It also showed meaningful changes from students, who are willing to make efforts in their daily lives to reduce the water pollution. Thus, the experiential activities related to water quality evaluation using macro-invertebrates are proved to stimulate significant participations for protecting the environment and it is the goal of environmental education. However, the analysis on the difference between male and female students in terms of the degrees on that each group have their attitudes, knowledge, or will to take actions for the environment indicated insignificant outcome. The survey on the teachers who are involved in environmental education and leading the environmental club revealed that 73.3% of the teachers have taught using indicator species, and 80% among them have not only used benthic macro-invertebrates and also agreed that environmental education using indicator species could be beneficial for environmental education on the whole. Therefore, if the teachers in environmental education are trained to become more proficient in categorization of water creatures, the activities based on the macroscopic simple water quality evaluation using benthic macro-invertebrates in the stream will help to achieve the goal of environmental education targeting streams and to accelerate more structured water quality evaluations over diverse fresh water system.
