In this article, I tried to investigate the problems of gender violence and the Depressed Abject in Cho Kyung-ran’s novel. There have been many studies on Cho Kyung-ran’s novel, but no studies have been conducted on “depression” yet. However, as can be seen in a series of works, Depression is the basis of an important work in her work world. Therefore, in this article, I would like to explore the problem of “the Depressed Abject,” focusing on her first collection of works, which is the starting point of the way she deals with “depression.”
The term “the Depressed Abject” was coined according to Butler’s usage, which was reinterpreted at a gender level by borrowing Kristeva’s term “Abject.” In Cho Kyung-ran’s novel, the main characters are “single women in their 30s.” These are victims of gender violence by authoritative men. They are sacrificed in this way, but by doing so, they become signs of accusing their violence. In this way, the “single woman in her thirties” can be said to be a “the Depressed Abject” that navigates against gender violence. The (non)possibility of mourning and solidarity with depressed the Depressed Abject suggests that depression is not just an individual disease, but a social disease. The artist carefully captures the gloomy emotions that are encroaching on the abnormal as well as the normal. However, there are many limitations in that the Depressed Abject “single woman in her thirties” is completely alone.
Nevertheless, in order not to damage the Depressed Abject, ‘true mourning’ is performed as a way to protect oneself. Cho Kyung-ran’s novels superficially do not deal with the social tragedies of the 1990s, but are obsessed with the problems of death and depression that dominated the era. In view of this, her novels are fulfilling their calling as ethically responsive novels. Therefore, it can be said that writing a novel about the Depressed Abject is the result of the artist’s expression of the will to reveal invisible violence.
