As our country becomes a super-aged society, interest in health of the elderly increases as well. People are concerned about their health and make much effort such as taking medicine or exercising. However, there are increased number of elderly people who experience a vicious cycle of “frailty“ due to overdose of medicine, unbalanced eating habits, and poor living habits. The death rate from “frailty“ is also increasing. According to a recent study, “aging“ is defined as something else. “Becoming old“ means the body function naturally degrade as commonly called “aging.“ “Frailty“ means that the body functions poorly accompanied by other comorbidities to the point where daily life is impossible. What is important is that “senility“ can be prevented while “aging“ cannot be. According to the diagnosis criteria of senility, it is described as healthy, prefrailty, and frailty. Elderly people who have already entered the stage of “frailty“ may find it difficult to recover their health, but slowing down the progress of getting worse can be done. On the other hand, elderly in “prefrailty“ stage can be prevented from going into “frailty“ stage. When prevention is started, recovery rate is also very high. Therefore, quick diagnosis and management of “prefrailty“ needs to be done. The WHO and other advanced countries are preparing countermeasures to prevent “frailty“ but Korea still lacks these measures despite the rapid increase in the number of elderly people due to the low birth rate and deepening of aging population. In particular, according to the Health and Welfare Ministry’s survey of senior citizens, the number of senior citizens at the "prefrailty" stage in Korea is found to be 10 percent more vulnerable to “frailty“ than the number of healthy old people. Recognizing the seriousness of this problem and finding a solution accordingly must be done. The prevention measures include a balanced diet and physical activities. Most important preventative measure is the weight lifting. “Muscle reduction“ is one of the common symptoms of “frailty“ that makes elderly people vulnerable to diseases. Experts recommend weight lifting to prevent “muscle reduction.“ In particular, leg weight lifting can help prevent secondary accidents (such as falls) caused by “muscle reduction.“ It also has good recovery effect, so consistent leg weight lifting is very helpful. Exercising with heavy weights or strenuous exercise is not weight lifting by definition. Consistent exercising by increasing the number of lifting based on the physical conditions is also weight lifting. However, a survey showed that many elderly people feel pressured by physical exercise and that it is also difficult to practice steadily.
We identified these problems, and we decided that a safe and consistent design of exercise equipment should be designed to help increase the muscles so that elderly people at the “prefrailty” stage, who have already shown signs of "frailty," can no longer lead to frailty.
Chapter 1 describes the background and purpose of the study, and outlines and presents the plan of the study's progress
Chapter 2 first examines the definition of frailty, prevention, and etc. It also examines how effective weight lifting exercise is in prevention. Exercise programs that are actually used are also mentioned. Through this process, necessary exercises for “prefrailty” elderly, necessary exercise goods, and essential items of design proposal are identified.
Chapter 3 analyzes the results of a survey and identifies the users' needs. Survey is done to elderly people with “prefrailty.” The survey results show the characteristics of the “prefrailty” elderly and their behavior and use of furniture in residential areas. Additionally, the recognition of importance of muscle exercise and rate of exercise should be studied. Understanding what parts are considered in using the exercise equipment must be done. After that, deducting the needs elderly people want from exercise equipment is done. Next step is to analyze whether the needs of surveyors are incorporated well in the exercise equipment through tables and diagrams. Based on the analyzed data, propose design guidelines for exercise equipment.
Chapter 4 sets the concept and direction based on the results of the previous analysis. It also analyzes and sets the materials and sizes by considering the user’s needs and characteristics in addition to setting the guide. Finally, with the sketches and rendering of the design, exercise goods design will be proposed that are for prevention of frailty for elderly people with prefrailty.
Chapter 5 summarizes and finalizes the research.
As interest in health increases, auxiliary exercise must be designed by identifying the needs of users. In particular, we decided that more research should be carried out on the issue of frailty among other health problems that have emerged as social problems. We hope that the proposal of auxiliary exercise with development of smart health function that can prevent the progress of frailty will provide another new direction.
