Kwun Sun-cheol(1944~) is a painter who captured the essence of Koreans through portraiture. Since 1989, he established an international reputation through his works in Paris and is still actively producing art in both Korea and France. Kwun has delved into the realization of Korean identity through his serial works of <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul>. The <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> series focusing on the wrinkled expressions of the elderly, show Kwun’s unique artistic style that can be considered a representation of national identity. This study aims to organize the background of his artistic world through his life and works and sheds light on his significance of art history.
There has been diverse interpretations of Kwun’s art, particularly related to the themes of <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul>. Notably, they are as follows: connections made between the incident involving his father and motivation behind the <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> series, interpreting <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul> as an abstraction of the themes present in <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face>, and associating <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> as an achievements of the realism art movement in the Korean art scene since the 1980s. These aspects are crucial in understanding the artist’s temporal significance. This study aims to elucidate these aspects. Based on his recollections, relevant information are discussed in detail by reconstructing of key events, his academic pursuits, the formation of his artistic philosophy, and his involvement in the art scene. His family history, interaction with his peers, and historical atmosphere provided the background for Kwun Sun-cheol to establish his artistic direction toward the pursuit of Korean style art. The incident involving his father did not significantly impact the artist’s growth environment in terms of economic or psychological aspects during his childhood. However, it significantly hampered his activities under the guilt-by-association system.
Kwun’s artistic journey coincided with th tumultuous events of the 1960s when discussions about finding the ‘Korean’ in society and culture were fervent along with anti-Japanese protests and awareness against indiscriminate adoption of Western culture. In the art field, there was a mood to grow emphasis on pursuing ‘our art’ based on Korean cultural tradition and Korean reality, and this trend is well represented in Kwun’s works such as portraiture, self-portraits, Soul and Jesus, face sketches, Sexual Slavery victims, and historical figures, ets. The trauma of his childhood, marked by his father’s incident, became a powerful motivation for his pursuit of Korean identity. The tragedy of his father became a catalyst for sympathizing with the national suffering and pain caused by war and massacre, and inspired the motive behind the <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul> series expressing the nation's resentment. Kwun embraced both abstract art and figurative art from his university years, and this point is explored in the text through discussions on the abstract-figurative debates in Korean art scene and his retrospections. <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul> applied the abstract art he acquired in university to express the ‘soul’ of Koreans who were sacrificed in harsh modern and contemporary Korean history. The work <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soksae> in 1969 marks the starting point for <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul>. This is the fact confirmed by the artist’s retrospections and exhibition photos from 1978. It becomes clear the <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul> were being produced to express the life and mind of Korean at the late 1960s and continued to be major works into the 1970s.
During his university years, Kwun actively engaged in artistic exploration through constant collaboration and exchange of ideas with like-minded juniors and seniors such as Oh Yoon and Kim JI-ha. Kwun was a practical member of Hyeonsil Dongin and actively collaborated with other members. They adopted the Mexican mural as a symbol for expressing Korean reality, and affected Kwun. Through interactions with fellow students who shared similar thoughts, Kwun’s artistic direction became firmly established. Kwun Sun-cheol’s art has the same root and intention point as Hyeonsil Dongin. In this context, a clear comparison was made between the works of Oh Yoon and Kwun. They shared commonalities such as creating a prototype of the Korean individual, embodying the sprit of the nation, expressing interest in tradition and commitment to its continuation, a concern for the realities of life and an awareness of labor issues. Kwun’s artist notes reveal his concerns about social inequality, poverty, and issues related to labor. These concerns manifested in his paintings depicting scenes of life in 1970s. Notably, both Kwun and Oh Yoon portrayed the ‘soul’ as rising bodies of the deceased, symbolizing the horrors of war and massacres, and confirmed their shared historical and national consciousness.
Kwun consistently engaged in sketching faces in various life scenes such as crowded waiting-rooms at train station and markets from his university days. The creation of <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> was produced based on the vivid inspiration derived from these <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face sketches>. The earliest confirmed year for <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> from this research is 1975. He was influenced by Cézanne since the late 1960s, actively incorporating Cézanne’s color planes and dots into his paintings in the 1970s. The subsequent prominence of color-dots in Kwun’s unique style underscores the impotance of Cézanne’s influence. This aspect of Kwun’s work is explored through comparison with those of Cézanne.
In 1989, Kwun immigrated to France, established the SONAMOU Association, and founded the collaborative workspace Arsenal. The bold and adventurous spirit, which had been constrained in Korea due to the guilt-by-association system, was expressed through the activities of SONAMOU Association. Examining his artistic tendencies and characteristics in relation to <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> sheds light on issues pre-existing interpretations through the study of the activities of SONAMOU Association. The activities of SONAMOU Association made significant contributions to cultural exchange between Korean artists in France and Korean-French interactions, and leave a lasting legacy in his career. Moreover, Kwun’s move to France and his involvement in the local art scene served as a catalyst for his ascent to a global artist. This transition brought significant changes to his art. The artistic inspiration derived from the new environment manifested in the creation of large-scale works, the attachment of objects to paintings, and the incorporation of effects like attaching paint scraps to the canvas in works such as <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul>. <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul> initially combined the tendency of abstract expressionism with Informel abstract forms but evolved into a distinctive abstract style centered on themes like the division of Korea into North and South before and after in 2000s.
<!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face Sketch> in 1960s~1970s shows a tendency to use long lines to extract the features of the head shape and facial appearance. However, in works from the 1980s onwards, there is a shift towards using short lines and concise forms to capture not only the external features but also the inner essence of the portrayed individuals. The work <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Self Portrait> has been created continuously from 1960s to the present day. The self-portraits provide insight into the artist's self-awareness and the chronological trends.
The series <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Jesus> have been created since the loss of his wife in 2012. The works <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Jesus>, <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Sexual slavery victims>, and portraits of historical figures mark a significant shift to new themes, diverging from the earlier focus on <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Face> and <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Soul>. The inclusion of <!-- Not Allowed Tag Filtered --><Sexual slavery victims> and historical figures in his repertoire reflects his perspective on history, his connection with the people, and a sense of mission as a painter. These paintings depict real individuals, referencing photographs to faithfully reproduce recognizable features to anyone through his unique stylistic approach.
Kwun Sun-cheol’s painting sought to go beyond mere imitation of Western art and aimed to portray the concrete aspects of reality in real human life, similar to the motivation behind the emergence of Minjung art in Korea. However, his art was fundamentally rooted in personal introspection, and its ultimate orientation was not towards protest or criticism. He regarded aesthetic completion as paramount value in his art, steering clear of not being confined to Western-centric values and maintaining his own distinctive formal perspective. While he engaged in the preparatory processes of reality and expression, he aspired to a different world unlike the Minjung art characterized by the social revolution movements, and he fundamentally cannot come around to that movement.
Kwun Sun-cheol has been active at the forefront of the Korean art scene and the global art scene. While conscious of the trends in the international art market, he unwaveringly pursued his own artistic goals. He secured an international reputation while working in Paris. The artist gained recognition in the local art scene with active exhibitions since his departure to France, and from 1966 to 2016, he has a studio at the Cité Internationale des Art in Evry, Paris. Currently, he uses the studio assigned to him in 2002 at les arches and the studio allocated in Paris 19th district since 2006. Alongside this, his achievements in the global art market hold significant meaning. Given that his art is firmly rooted in ‘Korean-ness’, his accomplishments can be seen as achieving the longstanding challenge in the Korean art scene since the introduction of Western art: the globalization of Korean art. In this regard, I believe that the temporal significance and position of Kwun Sun-cheol’ paintings need to be highlighted.
