Geological carbon storage is currently being noted as an effective and promising method for greenhouse gas reduction. For effective application and safety control of geological carbon storage, investigating influence of leaked CO2 from sequestrated storage reservoirs on surrounding ecosystem is critical. Impact of CO2 leakage can cause change of indigenous microbial communities and consequently affect the physical and chemical properties of subsurface environment. This study used the natural analog sites (Daepyeong, Korea) to analyze the influence of leaked CO2 on subsurface soil biogeochemistry. Our previous study distinguished the analog sites into three groups according to CO2 concentration of vadose zone: 1) low CO2 group mainly affected by atmospheric CO2, 2) relatively high CO2 group, 3) extremely high CO2 group. To investigate significant correlation between CO2 leakage and soil environment, soil samples were collected by coring adjacent to preexisting gas monitoring wells. Microbial community and microbial number will be analyzed by using 16S rRNA sequencing and most probable numbers (MPN). Biologically sensitive parameters including soil pH, water content, soil organic matter, soil carbon and extractable chemical components: NO3-, PO43-, Fe, SO42- will be also analyzed. In this study, we will discuss about the influence of leaked CO2 on the microbial community compositions and the geochemical properties of the soil.
