The purpose of this study is to explore changing awareness of “plants” and contemporary art that reconsiders relationships between humans and nature, as well as humans and plants, with an aim for a sustainable future where nature and humans coexist. By comprehensively examining major exhibitions and visual art projects focusing on the plant theme since the 2000s, the study will show how plants have become increasingly important subjects in art not as backdrops or auxiliary subject matter, but as partners of humans, amidst the trends of ‘nature,’ ‘life,’ and ‘post-human’ topics in contemporary art. The study also explores how humans’ perceptions on plants have changed by analyzing the different types of plant art and exhibitions that feature such plant art. Climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic were powerful reminders to us of the importance of the environment, and diverse artistic attempts concerning such issues have revealed the rising importance of the “plant” theme, evident in various art exhibitions and projects carried out in both Korea and overseas. While plants have been in art since long ago, today they are no longer treated as mere backgrounds or props, but as important constituents of the ecosystem, and dynamic beings with survival instinct, sense and communicative ability. This new awareness that plants are the partners of humans is being embodied in art through diverse perspectives and media. Research has shown that the number of such plant art projects has continuously increased since the 2000s, and some of the new attempts in the field of art to address various issues of the environment and plant-human relations are discussed in this study.
Art can serve as an effective and meaningful means for raising public awareness on a sustainable future in partnership with plants, not only independently but also in collaboration with other plant-related studies as well, including philosophy, science, literature and other areas, thus constituting the interdisciplinary area of research known as Critical Plant Studies.
