Korean bare-handed martial arts have the history and tradition for thousands of years. Martial arts regularized in the era of Gojoseon, the first nation of Korea, and developed during three kingdom era when they started a war of conquest. The training scenes of bare-handed martial arts shown in Subakdo from Goguryeo`s mural, Subaksang from Geumdonghyangro(burner) of Baekje, and Toyong(clay image) from Unified Silla, show us that martial arts were very popular in those days. Especially, Korean martial arts had various martial arts culture. Although bare-handed martial arts using hands, feet, and body had almost similar characteristic, there were a variety of forms according to the techniques. They fall into one of four categories. First, Subak(Byeon, Gwonbak) using leg-centered techniques rather than hand-centered techniques. Second, Sibak(Jolkyo) using hand techniques with some elements of Ssireum. Third, Gwonbeob(Syubyeok, Subakchigi) using the whole body and hand-centered techniques rather than leg-centered techniques. Fourth, Gakjeo using the whole body, and contending for victory with ssireum(Korean wrestling). Among them, original Taekkyeon was a combination of Subak and Sibak. Today`s Taekkyeon or Taekwondo have been succeeding to the tradition of Subak. The chart below shows a clear explanation. Korean martial arts which were developed in keeping in contacts with many neighboring countries after three kingdom era had different names per each period. Subak, Gwonbeob, Syubyeok, Byeon, Sabak, Gwonbak, Bakhui, Taekgyeon, Taekkeon, Syubyeok, and Subyeokchigi are representative names of Korean bare-handed martial arts. Among them, Taekkyeon represents Korean bare-handed martial arts after 17th century, and is the name loved by the Koreans for the longest time. In this tradition, after liberation from Japan, Taekwondo, modern martial arts, had a reputation all over the world in 50 years. After liberation, Taekwondo established under the situation that Joseon`s traditional martial arts could not develop because of Japan`s suppression and surveillance during Japan`s colonial rule(1910-1945). Japan belittled Joseon`s culture as premodern and unscientific one to excuse the colonial rule. Besides combative martial arts and collective physical activities were prohibited because they were regarded as the means of resistance against the colonial order. Yudo and Geomdo, Japanese martial arts, were introduced as a modern martial arts, and Japan tried to spread them via school education, social physical exercise organizations, and practice halls instead. In an atmosphere like this, Chinese Gwonbeob(Samsibyukgi: 36gi), Western Boxing, Indian Bongsul(the art of using a stick), and Okinawan Karate were introduced. During Japan`s colonial rule, the inflow of martial arts from neighboring nations was not only a circumstance to build practice halls, but also a foundation to accept modern martial arts culture. Especially after Karate was first introduced to Korea in 1936, the things which students studying in Japan were accepted, and then became a direct circumstance to form Taekwondo. Most of the first Taekwondo population had already learned Karate or Chinese Gwonbeob. After emancipating from Japan in 1945, those who had learned Karate or Chinese Gwonbeob came back to Korea, ran practice halls and improved the way of training and technical system harmonizing with Korean real situation. The first effort was to establish a name of ``Taekwondo`` from the Korean traditional martial arts, ``Taekkyeon. Naming ``Taekwondo`` in 1955 became a base for subjective accepting of martial arts culture which had already introduced to Korea and for developing Taekwondo into a modern martial arts. Second, it was to convert the training system into competition-centered technique system developed from traditional martial arts. At that time Japanese Karate and Chinese Gwonbeob fettered by traditional culture of martial arts, so they couldn`t make progress toward a modern sport. In case of Karate, it was led to formalization by adopting a ``stop pose`` which suspends in front of the opponent`s attack area to remove risk in competition. In Chinese modern martial arts, competition was degraded because it emphasized artistry and health by developing martial arts centering around ``Gigong gymnastics``. Gyeorugi(competition) which has a potential danger of deathblow was an obstacle for Chinese martial arts in becoming a sport of Asian martial arts. Taekwondo, however, overcame the formalization of competition and established actual competition. For this, Taekwondo made the best use of competition culture which had developed spontaneously from Korean traditional martial arts. Above all, Taekwondo brought in competition daringly, and systematized the way of competition to leg-centered way rather than hand-centered to remove risk. This change caused that Taekwondo become a popular sport by applying tradition of Korean martial arts culture. The identification of Taekwondo can be found in the success that Taekwondo became a sport instead of staying in one of martial arts. Leg-centered tec
