The purpose of this study is to explore the social meaning of the Resurrection in the Gospel of John in the passage about Thomas' doubt (Jn 20.24-29). In order to achieve the purpose of the study, this thesis uses the Meso approach in the sociological theory.
In Jn 20.24, Thomas is the person who represents the apostolic community in the aspect of Jesus' direct choice as shown in Jn 6.70. In chapter 20.25, other disciples speak for the viewpoint of the Johannine community as clearly shown in verses 19-21.
In verse 25, the news of the resurrection, ''we have seen the Lord," was rejected by Thomas, and he expresses doubt about Jesus' resurrection. This reflects the struggle and opposition between the apostolic community and the
is interpreted as John's intention to unite with the apostolic community through the sharing of the resurrection belief. This intention for unification is also caused by the persecution by the Jewish community, which allowed the Johannine community to form their understanding of the resurrection in the present, which endowed the Johanrine community members with the peculiar social world (internal thought structure or ideology).
In addition, the coexistence of the opposition and the unification between the Johannine community and the apostolic community in the paragraph about Thomas' doubt reflects turning point where the relationship between the Johannine community and the apostolic community begins to change.
Thomas' confession in verse 28, "My Lord and my God," can be understood as reflecting the intention of the Johannine community in the aspect of their theology. Thomas' confession, "My God," is the motif of transformation of their ideas toward the Jewish community, because the readers expect a change in the Jewish community members through Thomas' experience. The title, "My Lord has political meaning in the Roman context. It can be understood that the Johannine community members intend to transform the Gentiles' social world that the Roman emperor is "Lord." In the Gospel of John, the world includes the Jew and the Gentile and rejects Jesus, so it is possible that the world symbolizes external people who object to the Johannine community members, who confess that Jesus is "My Lord and my G o d in the context of their persecution. The fear caused by the persecution is solved by the social world which encourages the martyrdom of the Johannine community.
The understanding of death by the apostolic community remains a limitation which brings despair to the human mind. On the contrary, the understanding of death by the Johannine community is hopeful: death brings the eternal life and perfect glory in heaven. In the understanding of the resurrection, the Johannine community and the apostolic community differ from each other. The understanding of the Resurrection in the apostolic community, which resembles that of the Jewish community, remains in the flesh and has an uncertain understanding of Jesus' resurrection. On the contrary, the understanding of the resurrection in the Johannine community reflects the belief of resurrection in the present, such as Lazarus' resurrection, in contrast to the apostolic and Jewish comunities' belief in resurrection on the last day. So the Johannine community members are in opposition to the apostolic Community members who have a similar understanding of the Resurrection to that of the Jewish community.
Jn 20.26 reflects the liturgical context of the Johannine community. After the Johannine community members were separated from the Jewish community, they formed their own peculiar liturgical ritual. In particular, the description of Thomas with "his disciples" in verse 26 represents John's intention for the Johannine community and the apostolic community to unite.
In chapter 20.27, Jesus' comment to Thomas "be not faithless, but believing" can be understood as an exhortation for the apostolic community to accept the Johannine community's belief regarding resurrection. This exhortation community members.
In chapter 20.29, the focus on faith and the beatitudes are the Johannine message for internal people (the Johannine community members). The transition from seeing to faith reinforces the social world of the Johannine community members. The beatitudes bring about means of the transitional motive (from the Jewish members to the Johannine community members, from the past to the present and future, and from the faith of the nonpractical dimension to the faith of the practical dimension). This transition reflects the Johannine intention toward the world outside of their community. Especially after the resurrection, Thomas' Jesus in the earth is equal to God in heaven, that is, the Johannine Jesus is beyond the limitations of heaven and earth.
In conclusion, the motifs of opposition, unification, and transformation in the paragraph about Thomas' doubt (Jn 20.24-29) are the fundamental factors that form the social meaning of the Resurrection in the Gospel of John.
