Samuel Beckett's works for mass media-radio and television-deserve critical attention. One simple reason to study his radio and television dramas is that Beckett has spent a part of his creative energy and time on those fields. He has written six radio dramas and four television dramas between 1957 and 1982. Another reason to focus on his works for the mass media is that the study can reveal Beckett's basic ideas about
'various genres'. although he has written for many different genres, Beckett emphasizes 'genre distinction'. He was very unyielding in transforming his works for he mass media to other genres, for instance, theater. he states that the genre transformation could kill whatever quality the works may have. Then what are the unique characteristics of the radio and television dramas? To grasp them, the focus on the
spatial structures of the two genres is essential because 'space' is the element which distinguishes one genre from another.
The uniqueness of the radio space is that it is built in the listener' mind through the sound. Because its space is invisible, it is innately obscure; because it is created by the sound, it is nonexistent and transient. Thus, the radio space cannot but have the qualities of 'obscurity', 'nonexistence', and 'transiency'. The world of all That Fall, Becketts' radio drama, is exactly based upon those qualities aforementioned. Basically All That Fall portrays the 'nightmarish'(in essence, obscure) world in which characters are constantly tortured by 'death'(nonexistence) and 'Mortality'(transiency). The uniqueness of television drama is that it has two dimensional 'videospace' in which
miniatured images are portrayed. Television can also create various images relatively freely using the camera techniques and an preserve them permanently owing to recording. Eh Joe, Beckett's television drama, visualizes the journey toward Joe's internal world using the technique of close-up. Joe's bleak external as well as internal
world can be effectively portrayed on the 'black and white' screen. In Beckett's works for mass media, the form and the theme are inexplicably connected. It is not surprising that he believes in 'genre distinction'.
