The concept of seven deadly sins was developed in the history of the Church and came down to the Middle Ages mainly by Pope Gregory the Great. The Gregorian ordering became standard; pride, wrath, envy, avarice, sloth, gluttony, and lechery. The moral, devotional, homiletic tradition of the seven deadly sins, filled devotional and penitential literature after the fourth Lateran council. The parading the sins in a procession, the confession of the sins are the ways of dealing the seven deadly sins. William Dunbar and William Langland are the two representative writers who used the personification allegory in the form of dance procession and confession. Dunbar`s satiric dream vision, Dance of the Seven Deadly Sins, reveals the sins personified in a dance in hell on Fastern`s Eve, the last day before Lent. At the request of Mohammed, the devil, the seven deadly sins spring forward, leading their array of sinners. Dancers are the unshriven, tortured souls of the damned by the devil. Sins appear in Gregorian order. Although the dance is performed in hell for the entertainment of devils, it suggest the medieval grotesque, forcing laughter at human torment. Although they do not stand as vividly as sins of Langland in the confession scene do, the dance motif suggests the dance of death emphasizing the inevitability and the impartiality of death. Piers Plowman concerns the vices of man and in the second vision of Will, the dreamer, the confession of the seven deadly sins personified is depicted with the realistic descriptions of medieval daily life. Langland didn`t follow the Gregorian order of sins, Pride leading the confession and Sloth occupying the final position. Although Pride, the chief of all sins, confesses first, the root evil for Langland is avarice. Avarice is the great sin of the increasingly commercial, material world in the 14th century England. Langland is also particularly vivid in illustrating gluttony, envy, and sloth. Although in the ordered medieval society the individualism of pride, a rebellion against authority and God, was the most dangerous, avarice was the worst of the seven in the later Middle Ages because of the significant increase of merchants and commerce. The seven deadly sins are merged in the person of Haukyn and the spirit of satire pervades in Haukyn`s confession of his sins. And the confession theme leads to the theme of the second vision, the search for St. Truth with whom only Piers is acquainted. Piers Plowman treats specifically of the poor and the contemporary issues. Langland advocates poverty as the best road to virtue and to God. He links his praise of poverty with the seven deadly sins which cannot dwell for long where poverty is practiced with patience. The confession scene in Piers Plowman is more developed and complicated treatment of the seven deadly sins than that of Dunbar`s The Dance of the Seven Deadly Sins and it is the one of the greatest treatment of the cardinal sins in English Literature.
