This study investigated the source of electro-mechanical response of strain hardening steel-fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (SH-SFRCs) by performing the multi-fiber pullout tests combined with the electrical resistivity measurements. SH-SFRCs recently have demonstrated their self-strain or self-damage sensing capacity by utilizing the change in the electrical resistivity of SFRCs under external loading, especially tension in addition to their higher mechanical resistance, based on their unique tensile strain hardening response accompanied with multiple micro-cracks, in comparison to normal concrete and fiber-reinforced concretes (FRCs). The addition of steel fibers, highly electrically conductive material and tensile strength, in cement based composites significantly increased electrical conductivity, i.e., self-sensing capacity, as well as the superior mechanical properties including higher tensile strength and energy absorption capacity. In this study, the author assumed that the self-sensing capacity of SH-SFRCs was also much influenced by the interfacial bond characteristics between fiber and matrix because the mechanical performance of SH-SFRCs was clearly dependent on the interfacial bond strength between fiber and matrix. This study aims to further develop understanding of the self-damage sensing capability of SH-SFRCs by investigating effects of matrix cracking and interfacial bond characteristics on the electrical resistivity of steel fibers embedded in mortar matrices during fiber pullout. In addition, this study targets to detect the location of cracking in SH-SFRCs under tension by measuring the electrical resistivity responses using two or multichannel DC measurements. The study includes three major parts as follows:
First, effects of matrix cracking on the electrical resistivity of steel fibers embedded in mortar matrices during fiber pullout were investigated by using multi-fiber pullout specimens. The electrical resistivities of the steel fibers embedded in mortar matrices decreased immediately after the matrix cracking and during fiber-matrix debonding. The specimens with the two pre-designated cracks exhibited a higher reduction in the electrical resistivity than those with the one pre-designated cracks or pre-crack. The source of the self-damage sensing of SH-SFRCs in tension significantly depends on matrix cracking and fiber-matrix debonding.
Second, effects of interfacial bond characteristics on the change in electrical resistivity of strain hardening steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites under tension were investigated. The results of multi fiber pullout tests revealed that the higher interfacial bond of steel fibers generally produced more reduction in the electrical resistivity during fiber pullout. Since the strength of matrix, the geometry of fiber, and the coating materials of fiber are strongly influencing on the interfacial bond strength, their effects on the electrical resistivity were carefully investigated. High strength matrix, deformed steel fibers, and brass coating generally produced higher interfacial bond strength and consequently more reduction in the electrical resistance owing to fiber debonding. In addition, higher the number of embedded fibers bridging cracks provided higher reduction in the electrical resistivity as well.
Finally, the feasibility of using multichannel DC measurements as a tool for detecting the location of cracking in SH-SFRCs was investigated by using three different types of specimens including specimens with a cold joint, a double-edged notch, and two double-edged notches. Under direct tension, the SH-SFRCs exhibited a clear reduction in electrical resistivity of cracked zone, but not in that of the un-cracked zone. Moreover, the reduction in the electrical resistivity of cracked zone decreased as the distance between the crack position and the gauge mid-length increased. Thus, this study demonstrates that the location of cracks (or damages) in SH-SFRCs can be detected by using multichannel direct current (DC) resistivity measurements
In brief, the sources of the self-damage sensing of strain hardening steel fiber reinforced cementitious composites in tension are clear dependent on the matrix cracking, fiber debonding process, the conductivity of fibers bridging the crack, and the interfacial bond characteristics of steel fibers embedded in mortar matrices. Based on electromechanical responses of steel fibers embedded in mortar matrices, the location of crack (or damage) in SH-SFRCs in tension can be detected using multi-channel direct current resistivity measurements.
