The structural difference in planktonic ecosystem in the marine environment can influence the changes in available diet composition of zooplankton as well as sinking particles exported from epipelagic layer. In this thesis, the trophic position (TP) calculated by nitrogen stable isotope ratios of amino acids was used to assess trophic dynamics of zooplankton based on compositional change of diets. Additionally, the average TP values were estimated to evaluate applicability for tracking biogenic matter composition from sinking particle samples. The purpose of this thesis is to understand the controlling factors of the TPs of zooplankton and sinking particles.
The TP variation was found spatially in the calanoid copepod, Calanus hyperboreus. In August 2018, C. hyperboreus species were collected in the northern Chukchi Sea (NCS) and northern-East Siberian Sea (NESS) to understand spatial variations of the TP values. C. hyperboreus collected in the NCS occupied higher TP and had a low proportion of diatom-source fatty acids (C20:5(n-3)). In contrast, in the NESS, C. hyperboreus showed lower TP and a larger proportion of diatom-source fatty acids. Differences between NCS and NESS were likely to be due to the variations in the size class of phytoplankton community. The TP variations were also discovered temporally in overwintering zooplankton species. In Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, zooplankton species were collected in October 2017 and April 2018 to understand the differences in feeding activity before and after the polar night. Between two seasons, the TP values of carnivorous chaetognatha, Parasagitta elegans and calanoid copepod, Calanus spp. were consistent. However, the TP values of cyclopoid copepod, Oithona similis were 2.8 in October and decreased to 2.3 in the following April due to the increase of their algal diet availability after polar night. The TP variations of zooplankton before and after the polar night could be different based on species-specific survival strategies during the Arctic winter.
The sinking particles of the Pacific Arctic Ocean from 2017 to 2018 showed fluctuating average TP seasonally. In summer, the average TP of sinking particle decreased to 1.0, suggesting large contributions of organic matter derived from primary producers. On the other hand, the average TP of sinking particle increased from autumn and was maintained at 1.7-1.8 during Arctic winter, due to the limited export of algal material and dominant occupancy of microbially modulated organic matter. The result suggested that the average TP of sinking particles can be a useful indicator to understand planktonic community dynamics in the Pacific Arctic Ocean. The seasonal variation of average TP values of sinking particles showed different trends in the East Sea (Japan Sea). Sinking particles were collected from July 2017 to March 2018 at 1000 m and 2250 m in the Ulleung Basin, the East Sea. The average TP values of sinking particles at 1000 m declined due to the reduced zooplankton biomass and small phytoplankton contribution in winter, whereas those at 2250 m were relatively constant. Sinking particles at 1000 m showed larger average TP values (2.3 ± 0.3) compared to those at 2250 m (1.9 ± 0.2), indicating sources of sinking particles were characterized between two sampling depths. The result suggested the average TP of sinking particles can reflect seasonal dynamics of trophic structure in the planktonic ecosystem, and can be different according to water depth.
In summary, TP is a useful indicator in planktonic ecosystem to trace dietary composition in zooplankton and biogenic matter composition in sinking particles. The key findings in the thesis can be used for understanding trophic dynamics in marine planktonic ecology and biogeochemistry.
