The aim of this study is to look into the difference between the double object and the dative construction in English and examine what the structures of the double object and dative construction are. Since Barss and Lasnik (1986), the discussion of the phrase structures of the double and dative construction has concentrated on the fact that the first NP (IO) asymmetrically c-commands the second NP (DO) in the double object construction while the first NP (IO) and the second NP (DO) symmetrically c-commands each other in the dative construction. However, I think that there are other paradigms available which also shed light on the double object and the dative construction. Thus I examine how various syntactic facts that the dative construction allows VP-internal backward binding and the double object construction permits the subject to bear the nonvolitional causer role work. To explain it clearly, I introduce Fujita's (1996) analysis under the Minimalist Program framework (Chomsky 1992) and suggest that the asymmetries between the double object and the dative construction should be analyzed by semantic role that can clearly explain them. Also, I think that there is the abstract head for the double object construction. This head contributes the meaning distinct to the double object construction, and it gives rise to the hierarchical structure noted by Barss and Lasnik (1986). And I show that the backward binding phenomena in the dative construction are explained in MLC.
Given this assumption, I also deal with Case feature checking in the doble object and the dative construction in English. I argue that the structure of the double object and the dative construction should be posited separately and that NP₂in the former and to NP₂in the latter cannot be treated as identical arguments, with the result that the dative construction has only one light verb projection and to NP₂has an inherent Case rather than a structural Case like NP₂by Lee's (2000) the postulation of another light verb projection. In other words, under the assumption that the light verb projection has dual properties in that it is involved with e-role assignment as well as (structural) Case-checking, she claims that the higher light verb assigns an agent e-role to its Spec and participates in (structural) Case-checking of NP₂, while the lower light verb assigns a goal e-role to its Spec and participates in (structural) Case-checking of NP₁.
To summarize, I try to examine the difference between the double object and the dative construction laying emphasis on the backward binding phenomena and the differences of thematic interpretation of the subject. And I also attempt to show that the double object and the dative construction are posited separately by the properties of semantic role.
